The boy and I glued the seams on the lapstrake canoe last night - kept him up a bit late, but it was worth it. I was pleasantly surprised - he tends to have a very heavy hand, with little control and using a small diameter syringe to squirt epoxy threatened to be a disaster. He usually coats himself and his surroundings with whatever he's eating also. Nice neat job, few drips, none on him or his duds :). This AM, we were surprised at how much more rigid the boat felt.

good to hear. will you rig it for sail?

Probably not, it's a Sassafras 12, lapstrake 12' doublepaddle canoe. We have a 9'6" Nutshell kit just waiting for this one to get done, and it's the sailing version.

Ah. Shame. That Sas would be fun lil boat to sail. Paddling's fun, too!

I clipped and pulled as many of the wires as I could get to over the last couple of evenings, tonight we googed the wire holes. Again, a nice neat job from the boy, no missed holes and good focus. He's looking for a name for her - a good sign. Any suggestions? The 9' Nutshell we'll be building next is to be named the "Lookfar". What would YOU call a 12' solo double-paddle canoe?

how about "mine" :)

ask him for the name; sounds like the boys taking it serious so give him the honor. of doing the honor.

One he might like--it's a Sassafras, so call it: Bad Ass!

:p Thanks , Atavist. I mentioned your suggestion today and he "got it" right away... Bad Ass the Sassafras:rolleyes:. Made him giggle quite a bit. However, we are a low to no cussin' family - the wife IS a minister, after all. My boy's suggestion was a really pretty light buff paint job with varnished in and out wales , decks, and thwart with her name painted on in a sickly green. "Pond Scum". :p

Outwales glued on and tapered at the ends, runs'n'dribbles sanded on the outside, glass cloth for the bottom cut and fitted. tomorrow the inside gets 'glassed and coated. Sunday, the outside is attended to and the decks are installed. Then, it's all over but the painting (I hope)

good job hows the kid holding up with the essentially boring glassing process?

I did it myself this evening. The kid is fried after a day of video games on the wii with last night's two sleepover buddies, Am fishing with the same, going to a friend's farm with the catch to stock a new pond, trip to fishing shack to stock up, playing on the skimboard slip'n'slide, pm fishing at a different pond...we were watching a recorded "Junkyard Wars" after dinner and he was lying on the floor of the family room with his pet lizard (who ALSO had a big day outdoors) and both of them fell asleep on the floor - at 8:30! He'll help me glass the outside tomorrow.

Didn't 'glass the outside today - went fishing and gardening instead. bow and stern compartments coated, decks and trim coamings on and hardening.

Inside coated last night, outside glassed and coated this evening. Son did a nice neat job. First coat of epoxy really popped the grain, and he's militating to do an overall varnish job, rather than paint the exterior. He still wants to name her "Pond Scum", though. She will appear this Sunday at my wife's church for some kind of presentation they are doing.

Canoe looked really nice up front during the Father's day service. Lots of compliments and several enquiries re where to get the kit. Just re-sanded, second coat of epoxy tonight in between other projects.

Took a week off to visit mom in Mass. Scuffed the exterior, two coats of varnish and a night to let it harden while we watched the fireworks in Rehoboth. OOOOOH, shiny!

SPLASHED AND CHRISTENED ! Have some nice photos of my son and I trying her out in a quiet cove - will post later (Iknow, I know - no pics, it doesn't exist:p) . "Pond Scum" tracks pretty well and is quite quick. The boy was VERY excited.
