Just to make sure y'all don't get drunk on too much wood, we'll be there with our Sea Pearl "Scout."

Could there be 'too much wood'?
For an appetizer, here is my short video from last year's SRR...

Delight! will be there with myself and a new crew. My son, Lee, couldn't make it so my nephew Ralph agreed to come and keep his uncle out of trouble. Ralph is an outdoorsman with lots of experience in and on the water so we should be well crewed. Delight will have some minor improvements, at least I hope they will be improvements - tomorrow is test day on Lake Chautauqua.

I'm glad to see Delight!'s second crew of last year, Ron, will be there and skippering his new Jimmy Skiff.

I'll be there, too. Not as a skipper this year, I'm crewing on Chris's Caledonia Yawl. :) I'm hoping the weather takes a turn for the better.

Good to hear that you will be there John! Too bad Lee couldn't make it this year. Is Patricia coming up too? My son will be crewing with me, so my wife will be hanging-out on shore.

Steven, I just checked the 10 day forecast, and it shows Brooklin with full sun on next Wednesday. :)

Looking forward to seeing everybody again! - Ron

The Fleet will be there. Tony will be skippering Ran Tan again, only right as its his design. I guess I will boot along the Liten Kuhling, the faering and will have the ducker and maybe a yak or two as back ups. John Eastman will be chasing and taxiing with Fetch.

Ben,

What design is Fetch?

Ben Fuller
06-30-2009, 06:38 AM
She is a North Carolina design, built by Bruce Mackensie at the A'shop I think in Rockland in about 1998-9, heavily modified and customized by John Eastman her owner. I can find out more, plans etc, as needed, or put you in touch with John.

rbgarr

Is it a motor boat?

Ron Paro
06-30-2009, 01:53 PM
Is it a motor boat?

Yes, a good solid one too. Fetch is an open outboard skiff, about 17 or 18 feet, with about 5 1/2' beam if I recall correctly. I thought I had a picture, but couldn't find it. John Eastman and his dog, Jasmine generously acted as the launch boat operators to the SRR boats which were anchored overnight last year. John's good humor and expert boat handling were a definite plus for the SRR experience.

StevenBauer
06-30-2009, 06:53 PM
I'm pretty sure it was John and Fetch that rescued the capsized boat at last years SRR. In that fog it was quite a feat just finding the overturned boat.

Will Shane make it to the SRR?

Ben Fuller
06-30-2009, 08:03 PM
John and Fetch did rescue the turtled boat last year at the cost of a rather nice grapnel. This year a new 4 stroke 50 hp Suzuki 24 knots.

StevenBauer
06-30-2009, 08:22 PM
Will Shane make it to the SRR?

No, he'll be back in Oz.

Can you take him out for a sail maybe on Monday or Tuesday if I send him up your way?

What are the rules for trying to get aboard as crew at the last minute?

Dan
There are no written rules which apply to this question. If you mean, just show up in Brooklin next week and hope to find someone who would welcome another crew member... It could work, but not as good a plan as posting your interest here and making arrangements ahead of time.

You could also PM some of the skippers. Dan Noyes had posted the list in an earlier thread. (2009 SRR Fleet List (http://www.woodenboat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2153772&postcount=38)) This list is not 100% up-to-date as of now, but should be fairly close.

It's a good idea to express willingness to take your turn at the oars, (and mean it). There will likely be some distance to cover when the wind is very light or nonexistent.

Tom Jackson
07-01-2009, 07:35 AM
For those hoping to find a crew spot, I'd much rather that you send me an email at <tom@woodenboat.com>, which I will then forward to the skippers.

Tom,

Sorry to advise but I'll have to miss this years event. I was planning to serve again as chase boat but have schedule conflict. I believe brother Bob is otherwise occupied as well.

Have fun all and looking forward to the pics.

I think that's all of 'em. Sorry, no captions. And because I'm loading them to photobucket as I format these posts, those looking this very moment may be getting error messages instead of pictures. Just give them a minute.

It was great fun. Malcolm Forbes and I were the last boat back to the anchorage, but as he says, his boat has a strong tendency to keep the open side up, which is sometimes a worthy thing to give up speed for. For the early part of the day when we were rowing, we were near the front of the pack.

Sure looks like fun. What's the name of that island you landed on?

huisjen
07-10-2009, 10:25 PM
We landed on the south side of White Island, having passed west of Little Babson Island, west of Conary Island, around the west and south sides of Campbell Island, and then along the north sides of Greenlaw and Stinson Necks. After lunch we went SE, counter clockwise around Crow Island, NE and counter clockwise around Mahoney Island, then west, passing south of Hog Island and back to the WoodenBoat anchorage.

Lance, I thought you'd be there. I kept looking at white bearded guys and thinking, "no... that's not quite what he looks like..."

Well I was there in spirit. I couldn't get my schedule together before the registration deadline. My 17' Herreshoff would have fit right in with that group. Maybe next year. Meanwhile I've been sailing the Black Skimmer around the shallows of Kittery Point, and eagerly anticipating the August Wellfare Fleet Cruise. Which boat did you crew on?

The weather was fantastic until late last night. Yesterday's sail was quite fantastic!

Regarding the 'cabin' boat, that was Graham Byrnes' EC22 SOUTHERN SKIMMER. It has a small cuddy type cabin. I don't think that there was any stated requirement for open boats. The requirement is that the boat must be suitable for navigation in the conditions found in the waters near WoodenBoat, and generally able to be beached and re-launched withouut assistance. See the 2009 application form which is available by following this link to this PDF document (http://www.woodenboat.com/forum/../smallreach/09_SR_program.pdf).

I think that a GIS will be great for for the SRR. I had a great time sailing my Jimmy Skiff up there this weekend. Yesterday, with the wind and waves, I was doing some surfing in my skiff, and according to my GPS, had a top speed of over 9 kts. Not too shabby for a 13' non-racing, open skiff.

Yes, Ben was sailing LITEN KUHLING, his 19’ εfjordsfaering. He also did a demonstration next to the WB dock of capsizing and recovery of RAN TAN. The Harrier is quite impressively stable. He had to work very hard to get it over and to fill it with water.

Tremolino was there. That was also a treat to see.

As for the Core Sound and the EC22, they are very nice designs for going relatively fast in the conditions found in the SRR. When we had light air on Friday, they put up a stay-sail and it seemed as if they had fired up a motor.

Wahhh Hoooo
best SRR ever!!!!!!

Saturday was epic! Sunny, warm, blowing 19 mph at lunch, then raise sail and the broad reach back to Wooden Boat, blasting along at the same speed as the cresting three foot chop, spray rolling off the bow a sheeting back across the boat, hauling on the tiller lines fighting the cloud of main sail, main sheet straning, plume of white water at the stern and the stern wave still rising aft of the transom, 7-8 mph feeling like 20! What a ride, and nothing broke!!!
cant wait to post video!

9 knts! thats over the ground? I was talking with a Cal yawl that got up to I think it was 6.8 mph.

I have got to get one of those GPS thingies, as soon as I get a road worthy car.

--- It disappears fast, doesn't it? Man, if I had a place to build/stow it in my tiny urban yard, that would be my boat (I think my Ford Focus might just barely tow its 700 pounds plus windage). We were still dragging our boat to the start line at the Everglades Challenge last March while the EC22 was just plain gone (and the air was LIGHT); I think the only person ahead of them was Randy Smyth on his very radical, very light, and very over-canvased trimaran, Sizzor. I have a somewhat shadowy photo of the EC22 starting off in the sunrise light, if interested. --Wade

She's flying her green, white and yellow mizzen staysail. Ray had one on his Core Sound 20, too. Ray told me that in the light morning air Friday that raising the mizzen staysail increased their speed from 2 knots to 3 knots.

Here is Ray's mizzen staysail:

Dan, we took most of the boats out Saturday night because of the weather predicted. Sunday morning it was so foggy and rainy that we didn't go out. Saturday we went out around Hog and Harbor Islands and around Smuttynose Rock keeping all to port, then through Naskeag Harbor and out around Babson Island and Little Babson Island to starboard and then lunch on the beach on Torrey Island. After lunch we mostly just headed back to WoodenBoat. It was blowing over 20 knots at that point and building. Much fun. :D

Most folks did indeed pull out promptly on Saturday. Some of us stayed out longer, double reef in the faering seeing 7 plus on the GPS, Lancing Maduro, the Indonesian boat look in partial control and smoking at double digits. Wade in the Bahama boat single reefing and strafing the anchorage. Breeze kept building and I looked at weather data which said gusting 30 by mid afternoon. Talked to Greg who had been hitting low double digits planing down the reach and comfortably staying around 9.

Since most players had GPS it would be interesting to see what their peak numbers looked like and when.

It did indeed start foggy and rainy on Sunday but by about 10 it was a lovely day for boat play calm and then a breeze in around 1pm. I dug out the skin on frame for a paddle to Center Harbor, playing Hogan to Far & Away for a while. Then it was pull the faering, Tremolino and the ever so useful Fetch.

The ducker is still over at WB; she did not get a ride so might do a fast launch when I go to pick her up.

The following link will take you to a video from last year's Texas 200. At about 2:10 into the video, you'll see the EC22 zooming past me like I'm sitting still. The video also has several other B&B designs under sail, including some Core Sounds and the Princess 22.

http://www.tetra-sail.com/tx200_video/tx200boats.wmv

If you ever have a chance to see Southern Skimmer, look quickly. It tends to disappear before your eyes. It can accelerate from a dead stop to 7 or 8 knots in a heartbeat. Remarkable boat. (Almost as remarkable as the B&B Lapwing which I am building!)

The Mizzen Staysail is a great sail for a cat ketch boat.

As you can see in the phot it does tend to starve the main a bit in the lower sections but the results speak for themselves. Once I had it deployed I was pulling nicely working my way up the fleet making up lost placement when the more traditional tucked up stern boats were able to outrow me with ease.

The Staysail on a CoreSound is about 95 sq ft which is a big increase form the stock sails area of 155 sq ft. Even moreso on my CS 20 as the Prior owner ordered the sail without roach and battens as he did not want to set battens every sail. The roach and battens would give me 20% more sail area than I have in stock sails now.

In the very light air we had as we cleared Basbon Island the Staysail was yielding a 50% speed increase. As the winds built a bit we were making 5 knts on about 60 degrees apparent wind angle.

The Staysails chief disadvantage is the need to douse on every tack and change the tack and clew.

As such there were a couple short tacks we simply doused the sial and waited untill we tacked again to redeploy where we needed to make some disrttance to clear an island.

Recutting a jib would likely not be a satisfactory staysail. the staysail is a very light air sail with very light spinaker type cloth. On The Core Sounds it has a line in the luff and the halyard is lceated off aft of the mizzen mast under the side deck with the tack cleated off on windward side deck. As such the sail and the halyard act as stays for the unstayed mizzen mast.

The clew is sheeted to teh mizzne sprit boom and when the mizzen is sheeted out it acts to get sheeting angle better for staysail when beam reaching.

--- Very interesting details, thanks. I was curious as to where things attached. So this is mostly a reaching sail, then? Probably not a solution for me in a crowded, skinny hull. -- Wade

I have pulled as close as 60 degrees true with staysail up and kept it filled, but that close winded and the staysail is not providing much as drag is nearly as much as lift.

So yes, it works best as a reaching and dwonwind sail.

I used it again on our sail to Mahoney and it was woring to good effect there as well once I corrected course. Based on prior description verbally to me, I started off dead dwonwind to Smutty nose thinking that was mahoney. As I saw the fleet headinghigher and saw Graham round the other island to the East, I realized my error and bore up. At that point the Mizzen staysail started pulling more as I had flow over leeward as well as having it filled. I went form 2.5 knts dead downwind to 5.5 on a deep reach.

I think I would be hesitant to fly sucha sail in a skinny boat where the complexity of the lines would overrule...

--- I get much of my sail training from videos like that ;-) Looks like your dory was giving the Core Sound 20 (I think) a good run. Is this where the powerful hull of the Core Sound loses out to the fine lines of the dory on that type of course? I wonder also when the mizzen starts robbing the main. I was cruising New Haven area yesterday experimenting and found that on runs I might as well lower the mizzen for all the good it does (in contrast broad reach tacks downwind seemed much more pleasant and much faster). So was the single large sail of the dory more advantageous on that run as you passed the Core Sound?-- Wade

I think I was already in the harbor when that video was shot. Graham and I were pretty much first ones back and in the high winds the CoreSound clearly has advantage.

Dan had the advantage in hi Alpha Beachcomber when we left day one in no wind and rows very nicely. He also bested me in a downwind run to go around Smuttynose and into Naskeag. I had been outpointing and outreaching him earlier when we sailed upwind.

Also I made up the ground once we cleared Naskeag and when we were side by side reaching to the beach I edged by him as well.

I must say I was impressed with the Beachcombers abilities and vowed to get the sails the plans call for with roach and battens for next year.

There is already a friendly rivalry between Dan and I and I do emphasize friendly.

I certainly had the better muffins and Peach Cobbler at the Regatta and share d the muffins with Dan Sunday morning.

I was impressed withthe Alpha, and I suspect Dan was surprised atthe CoreSounds light air capabilities pointing andd reaching.

Downwind the Alpha has a siginificant advantage in lighter airs, but I suspect the CS would be better in heavier airs.

And Dan seems clearly impressed with the EC 2.s performance overall.

I certainly do look forwards to sailing with and against Dan and his Alpha Dory next year too.

And more Peach Cobbler too and maybe I can find Dan that night to share some with him.

What a Weekend!
It was great to meet Ghram of B&B yachts and real nice of him to make the trip up. I liked his story at the saftey lecture of how the old timers in the skiff club he sailed at as a boy thought the introduction of flotation in the boats was a bad idea because it would lead to sloppy boat handling and poor semanship!

Ray and I had a good time going back and forth planing vs displacement hulls.
The SRR is not a race, we all start sailing over a 45 munite +- time period and often take small detoures or spend time experimenting with our riggs.

On Saturday (the real fun day) The Alpha set out early, Jole rowed us out past Babson Island headed for Smutty Nose, just beyond Babson we took on Art from the chase boat Loon as a passenger, then raised the Jib and practiced heaving too for 20 munites or so as the fleet sailed out past us.
The first sailing leg was out to smutty nose in 12mph breeze close hauled, we started probably a half mile behind the CS 20 and reeled Ray in probably by about 1 mph, the wind died on rounding Harbour/smutty nose thats where the low wetted surface of the Alpha let us catch up (video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfLUW6VcLvc&NR=1) a few munites later the whole fleet was becalmed sails hanging.
Next leg to Torry there is also a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTIpCz_NMJM&feature=related the CS 20 And a green Ness Yawl are visable off our starboard side.
as we approached Torey the wind was freshening and the CS 20 closed the gap 800+- ft and sailed right buy as we jibed and close hauled for the beach and lunch!

Seemed to me the wind speed was the deciding factor on performance, 15mph or so being the break point below that the Alpha displacement hull with low wetted surface area was faster above that the Core sound planing type hull.

As Ray mentioned above and several times to me at the regatta the CS 20 could safely handle more sail area, not so for the Alpha.
But I thought the Alpha performed wonderfully for a 100+ yr old design. Also the Alpha though 1 ft. longer really is a much smaller boat than the CS 20.

And the EC 22 ? like I said it was usually hull down over the horizon.

Right, It's not a race... At keast untill someone starts pulling up to you... Then it's a race.....

I think Dan's and my Boat are currently pretty evenly matched in the conditions we had.

Dan and I both pressed our boats advantages to good use.

It was depressing seeing Dan slide by me on that deep run in light airs.

It was exhilarating sneaking back up on him from the run from Naskeag Harbor up to Torrey Island. It was also very exhilarating passing boats left and right on the way up there... (some of the slower boats had given up on rounding smuttynose and doing Naskeag as wind was building and for safety sakes had headed directly up to Torrey.

I learned a lot this weekend sailing with and against others, and Graham gave me pointers on improving my performance further.

I look forward to implementing them to improve my abilities...

Iron sharpens Iron and friendly rivalries and challenges improve both parties.

Anyone see my Oselver out there? I lent it out, but do not see any pix...at least this boat has been in each SRR even if her owner is challenged:D

Love to see pix of her, esp if they set sail. I think they were in the rowing mind set , but.....

I hope to be there next year in Raider---Lighweight Fusion Faering with two sliding seats if anyone remembers last year. It was in the last issue of WB...Launchings.

I will be out in Raider the next week on Newport Harbor if anyone wants to have a run.

Next year, if anyone is boatless, I will lend out a few of my faerings---Bindals, Rangoland, Oselver, Pram, ---just let me know. I also have an Oslojollen that I am finishing up with water ballast and carbon fiber spars as an open raid boat with two sliding seats...not sure if it will get done, but....
