Revenge of a miniture golf course owner

OK, so I am sitting in my boatshop on Sunday, refinishing an 8 foot clinker pram, when a guy comes in wants to buy a boat. This isn't too uncommon, happens once or twce a week.

This guy comes in and wants a "life guard boat".
I didn't have one laying around, so he looks at the 5 boats in my shop, and stops at the 10' swampscott dory tender.

Guy asks how much, and when I give him an answer he says "Christ! how can you charge that much for a mini-golf course decoration?

Apparently this guy thought that I made boats for miniture golf courses!!!!!

He did not believe for a minute that guys row around in wooden boats when there are so many good *&^%$glass boats available.

and people wonder why I keep a day job!!!!!! ;)

Thaddeus, Its scary what poeple will do. On route 36 up around Keyport (Sandy Hook bay area) in front of one of those drive-though-tourist-seafood-restaurants kind of places is a 16' sea Bright skiff that has been filled with dirt & planted with flowers. :( If I still lived down there I think I'd see if I could talk the place out of it & rebuild it. You know that Jersey cedar 'never' rots, probably only needs new ribs. - Oh well, what can you do.

That's what I told my self... I spent the better part of 45 minutes explaining to him "why wood".

I hope I enlightened him.
I said a prayer for him...Maybe he will stop refferring to his mini golf "decoration" as the 1/3 scale replica of the "Sindia"

He told me that I should look into planking with "Trex" He said that It looked very "realistic"

maybe there is no hope for him.

Greg Rossel tells a story of a fellow who stopped at his shop and offered him something like $75 for a small boat sitting out in front that Greg had recently built. Needless to say, it was a very brief conversation, as Greg wasn't about to explain all the workmanship and materials that went into this creation!

Anyone who wants to "plank" a boat with Trex shouldn't be permitted anywhere near a real wooden boat. The risks to the boat would just be way to high! :D

For those fortunate enough never to have encountered it "Trex" is plastic lumber. It is particularly popular for decks because, of course, it doesn't rot. However, it seems to me that even for decks it would just feel all wrong...like substituting using plastic sheets on your bed...

Over in Winthrop Harbor, Illinois there is a wooden King' Cruiser sitting on the ground outside a restraunt. Don't know whether they burried the keel, or cut it off with a chain saw.

Gotta build a deck soon. People keep asking whether I'll be using those plastic planks. Now I may like fiberglass boats, but I insist on real wood for my yard decks.

Yes, UHMW polyethelene plastic. Ought to look good w/ the Pergo.
