I stumbled across something on Google I never knew existed.
Google Books.
No fee, no sign-up, just go ahead and browse!
Thousands of magazines, tech papers, books, going back over 100yrs!
So, it’s official, I am addicted to Google Books.
Heard my wife complaining to her sister on the phone this morning.
For the last 3 nights, Tim has been coming to bed past midnight. This morning I came down at 2am, I went down to check on him, he was on the computer, reading about old boats!
I’m still learning how to surf through the Google Books, but I stumbled across....
THE RUDDER, 1901 to 1922. (http://books.google.com/books?q=editions:0rX0e9qjiKto3_rC9n&id=u7M6AAAAMAAJ&as_brr=1)
I’ve stopped reading them on-line, there just to big.
Each year is like 1000 pages of write-ups, reviews, plans, news, ads.
So now I just download the PDF, format and read them off-line, so much quicker!!!!
The Elco ads, are some of the nicest, so are the ads from the usual players for Engines, Hardware, Gears, Props, etc, etc.
I just finished reading about the 1922 NY Boat Show.
Boys Life! Remember those? (http://books.google.com/books?id=0_wDAAAAMBAJ&dq=boys+life&as_brr=1&source=gbs_navlinks_s#all_issues_anchor)
Every issue from Jan 1990- Dec 1999.
All Popular Science from, May 1872- Feb 2008 (http://books.google.com/books?id=qR8DAAAAMBAJ&dq=boating&lr=&as_brr=1&source=gbs_all_issues_r&cad=2)
Every single page!
I spent lots of time looking at tons of WWII Surplus adds.
How about a 1945, under wing fuel pod for $37.00?
Learn to Draw! Be a Draftsman! Make Rubber Molds!
Buy a surplus P-51 Mustang- $2750.
Whats New for Boating, any year!
It's all there.
All Popular Mechanincs From, Jan 1905 – Dec 2005 (http://books.google.com/books?id=fuMDAAAAMBAJ&dq=boating&lr=&as_brr=1&source=gbs_all_issues_r&cad=2&atm_aiy=1900#all_issues_anchor)
Same with Popular Science!
I also heard my wife say....
I thought I was gonna catch looking at porno, but at 2am, reading about old boats? I think theres something wrong with him!
Below is a Screen Shot, for Popular Mechanics.

hi
cool post
I was able to use the link to the popular science books and read those journals.
I was not able to get the link to 'the rudder' journals to work.
What exactly do I have to type into google books in order to read these journals. If you could be of assistance that would be much appreciated.
Apologies in advance for my ignorance.
regards

Are you able to read the Rudder on-line? All I get is a "snippet view" with no content.

No problem!
I 'm going to give the standard search sequence, just substitute The Rudder, with anything, you’re looking to read.
*************************************
http://books.google.com/ (http://books.google.com/)
And search The Rudder.
There is a drop down box, on the top left, in the Navigation Bar, it gives you 3 choices.
1) Showing : ALL BOOKS
2) Showing : LIMITED PREVIEW and FULL VIEW.
3) Showing : FULL VIEW ONLY
I chose # 3, That eliminates the search result to just what you can fully view, and read on-line.
Find any issue of The Rudder, before you click on it, look under the description and you will see a option....
About this Book- Add to my Library- More Editions.
Choose More Editions, that will give you all of The Rudder Magazine.
Also here is the direct link.
http://books.google.com/books?q=editions:0JPt2Nwo1ve_dIOiGW&id=P8I6AAAAMAAJ
Here is the link, for 1922.
http://books.google.com/books?id=Krc6AAAAMAAJ&pg=PR6
Choose DownLoad, as a pdf, and read off-line, for faster page loads.
Enjoy!

As I said in my first post...
I stumbled across something on Google I never knew existed.
I’m still learning how to surf through the Google Books, but I stumbled across....
So don't feel bad!:D
I'm net savy, but I'm still hacking my way through Google Books.
The biggest thing, is always, select Full View.
No snippets or blocked views!
Let me know if you're still having trouble, I double checked the link, in my 1st, post, and it's working on my end.
If any-body else is having trouble, please let me know.
Also, if you know of any good tips, I would appreciate those also!!
Thanks
Tim

Peter, I'm having trouble with that one.
Would you define it?
I'll guess at Wood Before Female:confused:
I also see my wife's quoted comments did not copy in the post.

Norm, I belive your getting the Snippet View.
You need to select, as below, for Full View.
From Post# 4 above.
Also, click on the link below, and please post, if the whole 1922 Rudder came up for you.
http://books.google.com/books?id=Krc6AAAAMAAJ&pg=PR6
I'm going to go get some screen shots, and post them back up in Post 4, of this thread.
One last question, do you have a PDF Reader?
Tim.

Great link - I tried to find MoToR Boating magazine - can anyone find a link via Google?

http://books.google.com/ (http://books.google.com/)
Click on the link above, or type it into a search browser.
Once you get to Google Books, Type The Rudder, in the search box, as shown below.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/timex_timex/Google%20Books/image.jpg
The returned search will look like the screen, below.
Looking at the Drop Down Box, select Full View, as pictured below.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/timex_timex/Google%20Books/image-2.jpg
The returned results will look as below.
Looking at the 2nd description, is the one you need to choose.
Underneath each description are 3 choices
About this Book- Add to my Library- More Editions.
Choose More Editions, that will give you all of The Rudder Magazine.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/timex_timex/Google%20Books/image-4.jpg
Now you are left with just fully viewable on-line editions of The Rudder.
http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s80/timex_timex/Google%20Books/image-5.jpg
Clicking on them will bring you to that issue.
As seen below.

Norm, those old images are being linked right from Google Books.
They are not directing links to that website.
Everything else I posted is.
Tim;)
This has come up before. If you aren't logged in from a US IP address, Google won't let you access the full text of many books/mags for copyright reasons.
A way around this is to use a proxy server such as this site (http://www.freeproxyserver.net/) (there are others that are faster - use Google to search for them). Type (or paste) the full URL to the Google book into the search box at the top of the proxy page. This will call up the book (or any site) hiding your IP and replacing it with one that Google thinks is US. You will see the links for full access to the book.

HR, a big Thank You!
I would have never figured on that.
Norm, I'm glad your in, and able to view.
Also, I figured out why, I never came across Google Books before.
Results in-side Google Books, do not show up, in standard Search Results!
Enjoy Mates!:D

I believe I read that the Google Books project is ongoing, thus more and more books will be added over time. Very nice for those older volumes, such as The Rudder, which are hard to access and increasingly rare.

Nice, how about a home made glider from 1911. I've seen google books, but not fully explored it. Going to have to spend a day there sometime.

google books is awesome, I've been using it for about 5 years since it first launched, it is ongoing, sometimes a pain when you find "the book" you want and it will only let you see snippets, down to publishers copyright I guess, but still a brilliant tool
try http://scholar.google.com as well - digitised versions of academic research papers from around the globe

Thanks for the info Timex. I had some old Rudder magazines that had been stored in midwest basements - it was impossible to get the moldy smell out of them. In a fit of pique I threw them out, even though I guiltily knew some folks would have loved to have them. So now they're on line - great - problem solved!
Great find thanks!
Too bad you cant just download the whole Rudder collection. Downloading them one-by-one is time consuming.
Looking at these old magazine really makes you realize how ugly yachts have become in the last 70 years or so..
