There was a reference to an article in Wooden Boat by Harry Bryan about spiling on the forum but I can't seem to find it. Can anyone offer a lead or link to either that reference or (even better) the number of the WB issue?
Thanks, David

What are you spiling?
Gert is a guy who's building a Grey Seal. he has some nice pictures of his spiling technique. D a search on Gert's posts and you'll find it. Rick

Thanks Steve! That was easy, even the first time that I tried it. BTW, it was in issue #176.
Candyfloss, I have plans for both Phil bolger's Queen Mab and Iain Oughtred's Macgregor Mk II. Decisions, decisions......

So it's lapstrake? The method I borrowed from Songololo worked fine for me.

The spiler is a simple jig made of two strips of MDF the same width as the lands. The cross strips are hot-glued to the lower strip. The lower strip is clamped to the lower stringer, then the upper strip is stapled to the cross strips to copy the shape of the plank.

Because the spiler is located exactly where the plank is to go, not next to it, or somewhere else, it makes an exact shape of the plank. I then copied it onto 4mm MDF, cut that out, shaped the top edge, clamped the pattern onto the boat & trimmed the bottom edge to the stringer. Must be perfect. Then copy your pattern onto your planking stock. Hey Presto! No edge set required. Check my thread "My new build".

Sorry, I've just read Gert's thread, & his method is just the same. So it's called a truss pattern? Now I know. I can promise it works perfect.
