I started building a Stevenson's LakeScow this spring...I got the plans from an old book that has the SkipJack, a Catamaran and this funky little thing in it.

I modified it somewhat by adding 2" of freeboard, a bit of rocker to the hull aft and 2" more beam aft and 3 at the bow. I elected to go with a daggerboard rather than the leeboards (just because I have never used a daggerboard before) and I changed to a Lug sail because I have a brand new 75 sf one that I want to use and a couple of smaller rigs that will get used on it.
I did some more work on it today but it doesn't look like it. Most things had to come apart and then get glued and screwed back in. I know...there's a big gap between the DB and case. I did this on purpose so I could shift it around when using different sail rigs...for tuning the balance. I am going to have various plugs to fill the hole(s) depending on it's position in the case. There are 4 inches of movement to play with. I also made a shim for part of the upper DB case...this is to support the deck over the case area because there was a gap. My goof up, I wanted the case to go through the deck and get trimmed flush but I pooched it (again!)

Here is what I started with this morning. Sorry for the disjointed post but I didn't know there was a limit of pics in a single post or these would have gone under the second paragraph. This is all dry fitted together and the deck is getting a bit of pre-bending in place before going on Semi-permanently. I am going to bed and screw it in place rather than gluing so I can get back in there in case. If things go well then I'll make it permanent later...if it's necessary.

I like your Harbor Freight Trailer/workbench combo!
Neat looking boat as well.:D:D:D
Thanks...it serves the purpose for now. There isn't any room in the garage what with another hull in there and supplies and junk and junk and junk...oh...and more junk :D:eek:

I want to know where you found the boards for the
sides.
I went looking for some clear 1"X12"X12'/14'/16' pine,
fir, anything and all I got was laughs.
The best I found was a 1X8X8 at Lowes for around $50.
Anything larger is "manufactured", glued up stock and
it ain't that great, small knots. They call it "stain grade".
I may move, just so I can buy some damn lumber I
can work with.
When they do houses and want clear, they just use
poplar I was told.? "It's all painted anyway"!
Came home in a real bad mood.
A place called Menards. Picked up a clear 1x3x12' to add to the two others I had to make my mast. It cost me 8.35 with tax. It is some kind of wood from New Zealand. Pity we have to import to get decent select grade wood in this country. This is just stuff for building and trim...not any kind of exotic wood (although it ends up being that all the same). It looks like a fir or pine of some kind.

That looks kinda like a PD Racer that got caught in a taffy stretcher.

Pinus Radiata. Now I know why we can't get decent stuff here. They export all the good stuff. Originally from California I believe, grown here on vast plantations left over from when all our natives got logged. Hey, all before my time.

Actually quite the reverse...the Lake Scow predates the PD by a few decades...The copyright on the book is 1974 and I'm pretty sure they were selling plans for a couple of years before that.

It DOES say from sustainable sources. Bet we export our nicest stuff too...there's more money in it. Hope it will do for the mast. Going with 3 pieces laminated together for 2 1/2" X 2 1/4" tapering after 2 ft to 1 1/2" square. It is supposed to be 2 1/2" square at the base but I think I can get by...if not, I'll just have to make another one  .

Your mast should be fine.

Much done today. Started with Jamming mucho caffeine so I could stay up then I started as soon as I got off work. Mast rough cut and laminated together:

Then I carved out one of the aft deck panels. (note: the book shows nesting them on one sheet but that gives one good side up and one crappy side up...I used two sheets of ply to get two good sides.):

And a different angle:

I took it off and traced it then matched them together:

and finally...I couldn't resist seeing it with a sail so I stuck in the old rig from my ScoutCanu (the CE is too far back I know)

Going to be fast in a blow, I'd put a lot of sail on her.

Yeah...what is shown is 60 sf and the Balanced lug I am aiming on putting on it is 75 sf so a bit more aft of the mast and most ahead of it...should really scoot!

Looks like you are making some good progress. I believe I mentioned on the other forum that I had built one of these, about 20 years ago. My second boat build, in fact.
Mine looked a lot different from yours - the added dimensions make a big difference. I found that mine sailed well, except for a tendency to completely bury the bow into the back of every wave when running. Your added volume might keep that from happening.
Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

Thank you. I remember that but forget which post it was.
I added a couple of inches of rocker aft too so that will tend to lift the nose up a bit (on account of I got BALLAST :o ) and the ability of the hull to rock back on its haunches a bit.
I'm hoping to get it wet (other than rain) weekend after next at Spirit lake (north of Okoboji) It may not be complete but it should be close.

Today's update: Got the rudder blade made...going with the original for now and will make kick-up later. Sealed all the seams on the inside of the hull also. Now for the not so good news...got all the clamps off the mast and proudly extended it out in front of me...William Tell would be in heaven. The damn thing has a good 3/4 inch WONK to it   :o . PLUS...the hole and the mast are 90 deg apart in orientation...so the WONK would be to the left or the right if left as is. This means I'll have to plane down the wider sides and then glue a thickener or use a wedge so the mast will fit the partner...or cut the partner larger and laminate a smaller, correctly shaped piece on top. I had already planned on trimming the hole so that last might be the way I'll go. No pics as I don't have time today.
