Hello All,
Searching the internet on boat design/plans/building related matters I keep ending up on this forum, so I guess it's time I join.
I have never owned a boat, built a boat, seen a boat built, or known anybody who has built a boat, so it's great to have this resource.
I hope I don't get on your nerves with my questions, some of them will probably seem idiotic...
Thanks for having me,
Marc

Welcome! There's a first time for everything, and for all of us. I was recounting just yesterday to one of my mentors how I started out as an ignorant and inexperienced newbie 25 years ago, and how grateful I was and am for his patience and help all along the way. He was gracious enough to allow that after 25 years, I might have a right to some opinions of my own, but that I still have a lot to learn. He then shared another of his tips with me, and it will be of great use on a project I am working on now.
We all start somewhere, and it's the journey, not the destination that is the most fun with wooden boats This is one of the very best places on the internet; glad you stumbled in! Nobody is born knowing what Thiokol is, or what to use when setting bungs. An acquired body of knowledge! The first step is the hardest; it gets easier for a while but then the work wears you out!:D

I'm pretty sure there are a handful of WBF members within an hour or so of Spokane who have both owned and/or built a boat.
Spokaloo and TerryLL come to mind ...

Welcome aboard! I just finished building my first boat, and the help and advice I got from people on this forum was quite valuable. Especially Tim Yeadon and Lew Barrett. I'm sure you'll find people in your area that are as friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.
Now wait a minute. You live in spokane and have never seen a boat. I am from Charleston WV . At least I have an excuse. Just kidding. Welcome. These guys are the bestest.

Welcome to the Forum.
There are a few members in the Spokane, Post Falls, CDA, Sandpoint area. Should be a lot more, given the fabulous lake sailing we have here.

everyone who has posted so far is an enabler. I came on this forum about two years ago with the same idea and asked some questions about designs and building materials. Then I started building little boats, 8-feet long just for practice, then a larger one, then started a pirogue last weekend. Stacks of boat building books and plans litter the living room, the garage bench has planes on it instead of engine parts. It is a terrible addiction. It could get so bad that you may end up in the bilge. If married, go tell your wife you love her now, and she may be able to forgive you later after you start building wooden boats.
Welcome,

Welcome! Here are your issue hip waders to visiting "The Bilge" area... report for inoculations tomorrow AM.
Have fun... just remember, no one here gets out alive...
When all else fails, use Thiotimoline!

Thank you all for the nice welcome, and for your words of advice!
I think I should be pretty safe. By putting up with me so far I think my wife has proven that there is pretty much nothing I could do that she can't put up with/forgive.
Secondly, I'm sure I would never turn into one of you addicts. I plan on building only one boat, and using it for years to come. Now, that's not to say that it wouldn't be wise to maybe build an easier boat first, in order to hone my skills for my "real" project.
Also, considering that I plan on building a power boat, you really couldn't count me building a very small sailboat, just to get a feel for what sailing is all about.
And why should I be held responsible just because my wife wants a kayak.
Anyway, it could never happen to me.
Are there special rules for posting in "Designs/Plans?" I tried to post my first question, but it won't let me.
There are no stupid questions, but plenty of stupid answers.;) Welcome aboard.
Welcome Austringer, when I saw your tag I thought you might be another Aussie:D
If you want a simple power boat to build first, try a Bolger Diablo...15' and dead easy to build...and lots of fun to use. I biult one in about 3 weeks.

Hello All,

Well said.
Here's another resource to consider ... CWB is hosting the Home Built Boats Weekend (http://www.cwb.org/home-built-boats-weekend) on July 25-26. It's for amateurs who have built boats, or want to build boats, or just like boats. In other words, it's for someone like you, and me, and everyone else here.
It would be great to see you there.

Nope, no special rules beyond those posted by the moderator. If you posted here successfully, just do the same in Designs/Plans.
I see that no one has yet warned you about the Bilge. That's curious.

Welcome aboard...just remember all the answers that you get here may not necessarily match the questions that you ask. Your mileage may vary. All in all a damn nice bunch of guys and gals, once in a while a stinker here and there, just remember to stay away from discussions on politics, sex or religion....everything else is pretty much open. The bilge is like wading in a knee deep cess pool, where every once in a while you have to walk on your hands...Best of luck, whippersnapper....:p

Love that! Welcome! Rick
Always be polite, no matter what you personally think of a persons opinion. :D

Hello All,
I have never owned a boat, built a boat, seen a boat built, or known anybody who has built a boat, so it's great to have this resource.
So do you know, and can you tell us, why you have this interest in boats?
You mention a wife, so you must have gotten through a fair bit of youth without any exposure to boating.
All the best and every success.

You mentioned that you were going to build only one boat. I said the same thing about 12 boats ago. Even if you do build only that one boat, you'll enjoy years of tinkering, modifying, updating, etc. It's great fun. Enjoy!

Hello Again,
It looks like I got back from my forced (work) trip just in time for the Home Built Boat Weekend in Seattle. I probably won't be able to manage the whole weekend, but I'm definately showing up tomorrow. I can't wait to see some of the boats, and attend the workshops.
That Diabolo is a really nice boat, I had no idea they could end up looking that good. I have plans for a Clam Skiff, and am considering building one as my first boat. The only thing that's holding me back is that 18' and 14 sheets of plywood seem like such a big boat!
The reason I decided to buy the Clam Skiff plans over the Diabolo is because the Clam Skiff can be built with a center console, and the open interior would allow my wife to set up a lawn chair and have a little more space and comfort. And to be honest, I really like the look of the boat, although I have never seen actually seen one other than the drawing provided in the plans.
There have been many warnings about the "bilge." I have given a lot of thought to those warnings as I can tell they are all well meant and heart felt. After careful consideration I have come to the only decision possible after being cautioned so many times, I'm heading there as soon as this post is sent.

Welcome! You won't find a more knowledgeable group on the subject of boats (or anything else, for that matter, just ask 'em) than the members here. I've been boating all my life and come here with every stupid question I can think of. There is no shortage of answers from all, all gems. This forum exists for all, especially new boaters. Great to have you!

Yup, for every stupid question we have an equally stupid answer.:D
There are experts here that do chime in with "pearls of wisdom" that would take a life time to learn on your own.
Welcome to the forum.

Welcome aboard.
The woodenboat community is far larger than one would think. Just WB magazine (better subscribe or we'll catch on and be mean) has a bigger subscriber base than the known number of wooden boats. Lotta voyeurs out there, which is a good thing.
It's said there is no such thing as a stupid question, except the one you didn't ask. That's almost true. You can find two sorts of stupid questions on this forum. The most obvious examples are in the Bilge. Descend if you dare.
But the other sort is the sort I used to bother the late great John Gardner with before there was a WoodenBoat. Like I already knew how to do it better than he'd written but I was sending a "question" about what I was planning anyway. That's one reason why my dory "Leeward" came out about an inch longer than planned and had a wierd curve along the top first couple feet of the garboard.
Again, welcome aboard and
G'luck
