Conspicuous consumption is a forgivable sin because it might have been good taste.

Veblen was right.

So was P. T. Barnum

I'd have to agree somewhat with the second quote, but you're off base with the first. Speaking as a craftsman and a designer, I'd have to say that these items - while ostentatious - are not badly done. Nice enough designs and lovely workmanship.

The Veblen reference was smack on target.

Count me in the "that's absurd" crowd. I (at first) posted a wise ass remark now retracted, but the truth is, I'm not that fond of Leatherman (Leathermen?) in the first place! And yes, I do have one!

There are far less expensive and much more functional and useful knives. A razor sharp custom made knife made of Swedish tool steel is a thing to behold.

Heck for the price of those, you can have a much better embellished and tasteful Beretta shotgun or double rifle.

Funny Bob, as an engraved collectible, I was thinking Midas Grade Belgium Browning O/U, 4 gauge skeet set in 28 inch.

Or, Ducati 1198S, (or BMW R1200GS...really more my speed) plus a full set of new Vansons with plenty of money left over for a travel budget. A regular Leaterman could be kept in the pocket for small roadside repairs.

I have seen better engraving work done on kitchen tables.

I'm not picky, I'll settle for a David Miller Model 70. (That's his own scope base too, the bottom half of the rings are milled integral with the base, for strength and rigidity):

Speaking of dropping stuff overboard, yesterday while working on my boat, I lost not one, but two "unscrewems" overboard while working on pulling ancient fasteners from Rita's decks. I then dropped a framing hammer in the lake as well! Not as annoying or costly as your car keys or cell phone, but still very irritating! So that absolutely seals it. No $40,000 Leatherman for me!

Thats why they made Cadillacs because people wanted a more expensive car than Ford or Chevy.

Let all the Leo's (astrology sign, not law enforcement officer) buy all the expensive stuff.

Now, who was it that said, "There's a sucker born every minute."

I believe that was P.T. Barnum. His assistant was credited with the reply "Where do all of the others come from?"

So who does make a good "affordable" multi-knife; preferably with a marlin spike?

I bought a Gerber and have no complaints.

But speaking of high-end stuff. The Rolex DeepSea model is said to be waterproof to 12,800 feet. Now who's tested that out? Do owners ever so much as let the rain splash their watches?

Never really got the point of a spike on a knife. Doesn't seem nearly as sturdy in any of the examples I've seen.

As to spikes on knives, I have Myerchin with spike that's proved very useful.

If I could afford a 40,000 dollar knife I could snap my fingers and point and the problem would be corrected.
