Looking for Mr. Jumpa

I am trying to find any information on a Sailboat built back in the 1970's called
"Mr. Jumpa". I believe it was cold molded but could have been strip planked. It was one of the first ULDB's and I raced against it on numerous occasions.
Any information you might have would be helpful, or if you could point me in the right direction.

I believe he owned one of the MR. JUMPA's at one point.

Mr. JumpA is now located in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada. It is presently skippered by Ken Ward out of The Royal Kennebecasis Yacht Club in Millidgeville, New Brunswick.

Mr. JumpA is a Farr 38' as designed by Bruce Farr design number 64. Details on her design can be found www.farrdesign.com/064.htm

Young Mr. JumpA, I presume?



We used to put our children in one of those when aboard too. Fun for all ages and they could entertain themselves right in among the adults in the cockpit.

Thats nice to see. Before I opened the other links I was trying to find a relationship to the Farr 38's we have here but I see its a one ton cup racer that predates them by a year or two. Was it built in the US? Farr 38's are the type of boat you watch coming into the bay and mutter 'good boat' into your evening tipple.

Got a Farr story. I was at a CYA social evening recently and the guest speaker was Doug Reid. Doug is a well known NZ yachtsman and currently has a high non sailing position with the Team NZ AC.
He was telling us about a boat he had commissioned designed and built by Jim Young. The apprentices were all cycled around the yard jobs and the one who was in the draughting office at that time was one Bruce Farr. So the boat , Waterwitch,was a Young ,drawn by Farr.

Funny how things happen eh.
Johnny G brought in the little Thelma photo album yesterday. Lin Pardey ( they own Thelma now)asked me find some info for her ,...and when he opened the album the first thing there was a magazine with Mr Jumpa on the cover.!!(There's a full article on Thelma in there)

Everyone sure was hairy back then.

I think the "hairy" thing happened to most everyone in the 60's.....especially non military types....
In 1965 we started growing beards and letting our hair get past military length to distinguish us from the military types in s.e.a. and when we came home, nobody shaved......and I watched beards starting to grow in the U.S......

I was rebelling at a more personal level. Cool people were growing their hair and it had been only a few years earlier that we were being sent home from school and told not to return until we had haircuts. It seemed wrong and mean and stupid to us but I was a little too young and isolated from world history to place it in a wider context. Vietnam was just someplace far away that seemed to have nothing to do with me, etc. This is a boat thread. Right. Sorry. Forgot...

Yeah...but all the cool hippy boatbuilding guys had long hair and beards......and it's a real bitch when you have naturally curly/wavy hair, made my sisters jealous.....especially when my hair was very dark brown, almost black and theirs was mousy brown......but why was my beard coming out with red streaks?......

There was a Mr. Jumpa at the Hyannis Yacht Club back in the early 90's. Had that open transom. I have some pictures of her after Hurricane Bob somewhere.

You said you had some pictures of Mr. Jumpa after Hurricane Bob. Are you able to email or post them? We are particularily looking for the "frogs" in the cockpit to add to the Mr. Jumpa website.

Does anyone know who the guys in the picture are with the long hair and scruffy beards We'd love to know more about Mr. Jumpa in that era.

Let me try that again. Here is a picture of my black sloop Redwing after Hurricane Bob in Hyannis. Mr. Jumpa's transom is visible to the left.

This is looking south towards the Hyannis Yacht Club.

I don't know what ever became of Mr. Jumpa. This storm destroyed dozens of boats in the Hyannis-Lewis Bay area including Ian McColgin's Alden Goblin. My boat and the others on this lee shore were taken out by a 40ft sailboat that pulled her mooring and dragged the rest of us with her. If I remember correctly, she was a transient on a mushroom anchor that was too small for her. Redwing was riding it out just fine up till then. Sorry I don't have any better photos. Is this the Mr. Jumpa you were looking for?
