I've just bought a single scull (as in a rowing shell for one person) and am looking for roof rack designs suitable for a four-door Explorer or Suburban. The rack should be able to carry the boat in an upright position (short trips) and upside down (long highway drives) and have secure storage for oars and (out)riggers.

I've gotten some feedback from rowers at rec.sport.rowing and row2k.com., but thought I'd try here also. Any experience, ideas, designs, plans???

Thanks!

I have a single scull also - CLC's kit. I use a standard roof rack for a local hardware store. It has a square bar. Mounted on this bar I built a wood frame with a cloth strap across the middel. The boat sits in the strap, kind of like a kid sitting in a swing. It is very similar to the 'slings' used at rowing houses to hold the boat as it is being rigged. My neighbor has a commercially made version that I stole the idea from. It turned out to be very easy to make.
