So I saw "What Lies Beneath" last night (scarry) and fell in love with Harrison Ford's Sailboat... It was a great looking mahogany and navy blue double ender... even trailerable. Can anyone tell me where I can get plans for this type of boat... What is it called... Advantages... Disadvantages... Building technique... etc... Beautiful boat. Would love to build one. Thanks.

Sclinger,
I'm with you. The boat was gorgeous and when I got home I started looking through WoodenBoat to find one like it. I think it is the Lightning, WoodenBoat issues 153, 154 & 155 explain in a three part series how to build one. |

I havn't see the flick, but a Lightning isn't a double ender. Lightnings have a transom.
Is the movie, itself, worth seeing? Other than for the boat, and of course Michelle Pfieffer. |

Haven't seen the movie yet so I can't offer any advice on teh make of the boat. HOWEVER, had I known "What Lies Beneath" in the man-made lake that I used to sail my Lightning on, I probably wouldn't have struck a friggin' rail road track with it! It was not a good day.

I saw the movie it wasn't to bad, but the boat was very nice! Didn't the boat resemble a 16'n Haven 12 1/2 class thats in the thirty wooden boat catalog?

The Haven is another transom stern boat.

I found a couple of plans that resemble the double ender very closely... The 23'centerboard sloop, Woodenboat plan #400-128 and the 22' Fox Island Class Sloop Woodenboat Plan #400-101, both by Joel White... Anyone built either of these before? Thanks, Steve

I haven't seen the movie either, but I have seen a Fox Island 22 and fell in love with it. Anyone out there with info to pass on about this boat?

That boat is gorgeous. I have tried to identify it also. It is not the fox island class. The skeer line is straigter than many classic boats. I would guess that it is 17-19 feet long. It has classic detailing and deck jointery with lotts of varnish. It could be a canadian or british design, and then again perhaps some olin stephens or rhodes one or one-off design. I would date its design to the 50's. I can't wait to find out. Perhaps we should write to harison ford.

According to a gentleman calling himself Rose (perhaps it's a gentlewoman?)and writing in the Misc. section the boat in the movie is a 23 ft. Tofinou. The boat was apparently supplied by Rodger's Yacht Sales who have a website noted in the reply. Don't know if this is true but the person wrote with authority!
