Need to make some deck repairs on my '60 CC Cavalier, the original ply appears to be 3/16" mahogany. Any suggestions for a supplier in Kansas City, Springfield, MO, or thereabouts? Or a mailorder supplier from elsewhere?
And as an aside...I have a good source for Missouri red cedar lumber and have toyed with the idea of planning it down to 3/16" and bedding it in as a replacement for the plywood. It isn't an authentic restoration, and it might cup, but are there other reasons not to use this? See pictures of the boat on our web site, www.peckofsalt.com click on "old boats". |

Good luck finding mahagany marine plywood in the midlands. I haven't found one. Boulter, see ad in WoodenBoat Magazine, is good and the least expensive I've found.

Sunburst Marine in Gaylord, MI 517-731-5491 is a supplier for Shelman marine plywood. I just received some BS1088 Sapele from them. Very nice stuff. They also stock okoume and meranti. Prices are reasonable and shipping (to Iowa) was cheaper than any of the suppliers on either coast.

Minnesota isn't close to Missouri at all, but there is a really good source of marine ply in the Twin Cities - Elmo's Lumber & Plywood in Lake Elmo, just east of St Paul. Phone is 651-777-1431. I just bought some BS 1088 5-ply 1/4" Meranti for $33.50 per sheet,; lovely stuff. They have several other kinds too, all at pretty reasonable prices (for marine plywood, anyway).

Hey Keith, where in Lake Elmo is this lumber yard? I used to live in St. Paul (until I committed matrimony) and spent alot of time at the Lake Elmo airport. Do they also stock lumber suitable for boat building i.e. Douglas fir, good mahogany, etc?

Elmo's Lumber and Plywood is right in the middle of Lake Elmo - they are the biggest thing there. Can't miss 'em. They carry al sorts of lumebr and plywood suitible for boat building and repair. And they're one group of nice folks too. They have a better selection than that other Minneapolis yard which carries marine lumber and plywood.

It's just east of "downtown" Lake Elmo, but not very obvious, at least to me. Go east from the Lake Elmo Inn one block; it's in a long fairly dilapidated building next to the railroad tracks. Look for the "Trustworthy Hardware" sign. They have just about every kind of wood you can imagine.

Kitchen cabinet contractors have access to large wholesale plywood distributors.
A local cabinet maker will get me marine 1/2" for $20+/-, Maranti 1/2" for $32. At those prices he's keeping 10%. Can't beat it. |
