My 24 year old cold molded dinghy was stolen in Guatemala. I'd like to build a nesting dinghy that will stow in the same spot : under the boom aft of the mast- about eight feet of usable length. Ideas? thanks

We'd need exact dimensions, as well as any weight limitations -- do you just pull her up by hand, use davits or a boom or ? Sailing, rowing, outboard or all three?

Thorne- rowing and 2hp outboard, tender to my 43'yawl "Retriever" 41/2' wide or so . maybe 11' long. I pull the dinghy aboard with a spinnaker halyard, flip it over and stow on the cabin top aft of the mast and have about 8' of room to clear the companionway. my old dinghy was about the size of a "Nutshell" I'd like to find a nester that fits in the same space.

Thanks Figment. I see the two photos of Gerr's "Nester" Can't seem to find any more details, dimensions etc.

I vaguely remember that his book "The Nature of Boats" includes offsets and details. I'm certain that you can buy full plans with a phonecall.
(yeah, the nester has been on my "when this dinghy gets stolen" list for a while now)

Our Sponsors ran an article on just such a wee beastie some years back. I'd search the on-line index for "folding dinghy" and "nesting dinghy"

Have a look at the dinghy designs of Mr. Byrnes. There are several options for these designs, including nesting versions.

thanks for all the input. I rather like the looks of B&B's Spindrift. Photo shows the 10 footer planing with a 2 hp outboard. Apparently fast under sail too..... nice job by team Turpin on the paw2

The Designer of the Nesting Spindrift will be at the Maine Boats, Homes, and Harbors Show August 11th to the 13th. He will be there with his Everglades Challenge Course Record Destroyingh "Green Heron" CoreSound 17. Come one, come all to Great Falls Boat Works Booth at the show and talk to him and the builder/owner of Great Falls Boat Works. I will be there displaying along with a Nesting Spindrift 10 if you care to take a closer look, and if you opt to stay after the show feel free to take it out for a test spin and see how the design suits you. I will also have a CS20 in Rockland, but not at the show itself if anyone cares to see how that one compares to the 17.

The Sept/Oct issue of good Old boat has an article on the construction of a cedar strip / glass covered version of the Nester dinghy.

Yeah, but he had to "adapt" the design for cedarstrip by rounding the chines. I gotta think that made her rather tender.

He also scaled it down in all three dimensions for the one in the article that was too tender. He had made another, full size that worked a lot better (but was too big for the designated mothership, hence the scaling.)
