Default For Sale forum?

I have some stuff some builders might be interested in.
Do we have a Classified Ad's forum or a For Sale lot?

No we don't. And this is perhaps the best policed place in the world. Got to go to Craigslist or eBay, and can't even give a heads up here.

I am always intrigued by the ingenuities poured into this 'pidgin'-deutsch in this example and elsewhere incl. movies. Good fun, often quite surprising in its mania. Reminds me of that german comedy show 'Loriot' where the lead-comedienne was doing a sketch on some british family of nobles all with names packed with 'th's - heart-breaking strain to 'get it right' and yet failing ultimately. Not quite the same as 'pidgin-deutsch', but fooling around with other folks' 'tongues' has its moments.

P.S. Yes that title is french, side-effects of most recently sitting between Paris and Moscow, with Napoleon's foot-sore G.I.s peeling off and making out avec les jeune filles allemandes and often staying put.

All the German I ever got was from a WWII Uncle who could mimic Hitler to a tee. His Pigeon German always had a funny punch line.

His wife always worried that someone would turn him in to the KKK.

We need a 4 sale section on this forum. I have sold vintage boat gear for many decades. There is nothing worse that having an irreplaceable bit of gear go to an unknown eBay bidder..only to end up as a nautical decoration!

Neal and Thud -

We have SO been there on this topic. Please do a search and read, read, read to your heart's content.

Bottom line is this: Wooden Boat pays for our fun here, pays for Carl to moderate the Forum, and pays for server space and other IT costs. They don't even require a subscription to WB Magazine.

All they ask is that ads be placed in their magazine, not online. In my opinion this is totally fair. There are LOTS of other web forums -- so put your for sale stuff there please.

By not allowing ads, they avoid all the hassles of Craigslist and eBay, "you ripped me off" interactions, "article not as advertized", payment authentication, swamping by spammers, etc etc etc.

I subscribed to wooden boat for years. When I sold my Tolly, it had several years of Wooden boat stashed in it.
In those days I thought Advertising in a National Magazine was for corporations etc.
Too bad Ignorance abounds at all levels eh?
Thanks for the information.

My favorite pidgin German comedy was the Sid Caesar 'German General' skit.

The power of Sid Ceasar's and Mel Brooks' et al comedy is greatest if seen and 'felt' in the direct aftermath of the criminal pathologies perpetrate/celebrated in Germany between '33-'45. The unspeakable horror though can only be slightly 'scratched' by these sketches.

As a footnote, Berlin, and a few other cities in Germany of the '20s had seen emerge remarkable examples of a culture of 'permissiveness', we'd even today call very 'liberal' with 'minoritities' quite visible, active and indeed of cultural impact. 'Modern'/free-er displays of sexuality, a highly-evolved culture of satire, and sense of rapid (potential) societal advance fuelled a remarkable growth of creativity in the arts/movies/ architecture for instance.
The accelerating ferocity of the reactionary reaction - quite broadly supported for too long by 'solid' citizens and their leading institutions (incl. pulpits) - reflected in good part the perceived threat to 'proper social mores' in these displays of 'uncontrollable' diversity. The other even more pathological part(s) that drove this catastrophe have filled many yards of bookshelves already...

Just think of all those years of strict fearful discipline suddenly lifted. The Young would be first to explore new directions.
The elders, still feeling the respect of fear, would still be a bit fearful of reproaching the young.
That's something most Americans would never understand, even if they read all those books on the shelves.

Back to the subject. Wooden Boat Magazine is the very best place to advertise a wooden boat for sale, but for selling small boats or parts and equipment, there are disadvantages. First is time. It takes several months to get a classified ad published. Second is cost. A great value when you're selling your yacht, but hardly worth it if you want to sell small stuff.
Just thinking - Perhaps our hosts could have a "for profit" section on the forum. Advertisers would pay for classified ads, (boat items only) and the items would have an upper price limit $500.(?) perhaps. No boat ads permitted - unless they were under $500.00.
Just thinking here - Our hosts might find they could create a nice little profit center here, while at the same time providing a great service to the boating community.

I suspect it would leave them wide open for liability issues. The wording of advertising can be very deceptive, and commonly is. And there is always the issue of using the site as a contact point to sell other goods and services. Closely monitoring the content of the ad before it was published would be the only way to prevent this. This would require staff and quite possibly some legal services.
WoodenBoat magazine is already in the business of selling advertising. And my best guess is it has been profitable.
(Besides, I enjoy sitting down and reading the classifieds - it is often my favorite part of the magazine)!

Okay, in a motorcycle forum I am in there was a guy who bought a set of tires from another member. Money was sent. Tires were not sent. After about 30 days, a call went out for a "bounty hunter" in the sellers area, to no avail. But then the internet came into play. The seller was stoopid, in that he used the same screen name everywhere he went. He was in the midst of a divorce, but not before his soon to be ex took their mutual info off her website. She was contacted. Her father was contacted. All in an effort to shame him into sending the merchandise(which, apparently he had sold a second time locally). He eventually sent a new set of tires to the buyer. But not before we found another posting he did on some adult website(yes, same screen name).

Apparently, he posted a pic of himself and his pee pee. Hilarious. in a sick sort of way. This all was almost two years ago, and we still speak of it in that forum.

Yachting and Boating World Forums over in the UK has an "under 200 pound" section. (They are behind Practical boat Owner, Yachting monthly and Classic Boat) Seems to work .
