Default St. Michaels Small Craft fest (photos)

Upload those photos, folks! I'll start with a few:

The race. Where else can you see such a glorious site? And this is not the entire fleet. Maybe half of it?

Here's the view from our little shallop, bringing up the rear.

Yes.

And a beautifully done Greenland kayak

Thanks for posting these. Are there any more? I always have the impression that this is a festival that makes me sad I live so far away.

I'll be posting some in the next few days. Gotta cull the best for Ash Breeze. Are previous posters OK with reprint permissions? Shots used will be credited.

I put some photos up on flickr:

My favorite was Silent Maid coming in:

But there were more.

And yes, you may use these in the Ash Breeze and the Mainsheet.

This years' event was a good one, and the skies were as impressive as the boats.

A crabbing skiff

Isabel, one for the power boater.

A gorgeous canoe that moved effortlessly through the water.

Silent Maid, with builder at the end of the boom discussing her with two paddlers.

...and when she arrived the night before.

A few more.

A rainbow over the event.

Two boys did a great job handling this sharpie in the race.

A well worn double-ender on display.

A melonseed keeping good company.

A few of the locals.

A birds' eye view at the finish line to the race showing the variety of small craft that attend.

Steven
I doubt it -- the three of us were only out together once on Friday, and the swell was enough to snap my rudder in half below the waterline, which put a quick end to that. The next day Dad had to leave to schlep my brother to the homecoming dance. Lame.

I've got some pictures I'll post shortly, however.

Not even, I think. This was the view from Korora, and there were even a few stragglers behind us.

"Glorious" is definitely the right word. Now all it needs is its own theme music

Awesome photos guys! Some are more impressive than the boats...damn, did I just say that!?

"Apple Pie" grabbed my eye...a very pretty boat. Anyone have more photos of that one? Or know what it is?

Thanks for posting, for sure.

Apple Pie won some awards her first year at the festival, when I took these shots. The detailing is incredible. Custom hardware, everything is just so.

What an incredible weekend. There's lots more, but I'm blurry eyed. If you still want more, I posted over 400 images to a gallery here:

Thanks to everyone who let me bum a ride on their boat, or just take their photos - I wiped the drool off, I swear.

Great videos, Crabby! Thanks. I talked about heading down this year but decided at the last minute to stay home and sail here instead. I had a nice sail Friday but Saturday and Sunday were total washouts. Next year we are coming down for sure.

Scott

I talked some with the owner-builder of Apple Pie.

He created her as a copy of a 1906 Rangely rowing boat. The layout, detailing and everything is drawn from the pictures in Rangely's catalogues and advertisements from that year. I had a chance to go for a short sail in her, and found her to be a lot of fun, but without a lot of room. Oh, and if the mizzen sheet gets hung up then it overpowers the small rudder.

He won the people's choice award a couple of years ago, and regularly places very well in the 3-legged race.

I think that's Frisky Biskit, built to the lines of a Chesapeake crabbing skiff ... one of the boats recorded by Howard Chapelle. There's a discussion of her here: http://www.woodenboat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=72014

Excellent photos Barry, the collection on your site goes beyond the boats to capture the feel of the entire weekend/event; the comraderie, food, town, everything about it. I like how you recorded the night-time light show. Great job.

Thanks Ted K. I appreciate the info. And thanks Woxbox for the photos. Once I looked at the photos of the full boat (Apple Pie) I can see the Rangely in her. A serious amount of effort in that one.

And some wonderful work all around, boat builders and photographers...a very talented bunch here!
