Default Golant Gaffer

I'm REALLY taken with the little Golant Gaffer and I'm trying to find out everything I can about them. Unfortunately the website www.golantgaffer.co.uk seems doesn't seem to exist anymore and everytime I find a link it's the same story - it's out of date and no longer active. What's she like, can you still get the plans, what does she cost to build, where can I see some nice photos of one, where can I see a finsihed boat in the flesh? Come on guys - help me out here!

Many thanks

gary

Where do you live Gary?, your profile is blank. There's one here in Portland. I'm still hoping to hook up with Mark and go for a sail. There are seveal threads here with lots of pictures. Try the search feature.

For a minute there I thought my luck was in... Portland is just 20 minutes away. Unfortunately that is Portland England not Portland Maine. Never mind

Default GG Lurianna

My GG Lurianna was launched in june. I did not build her myself, but I was involved quite closely. Send me a mail and I can give you lots of photos of the building process. Here are some pics of launching day.

You are only a couple of hours drive from Falmouth, there are several there including Roger's "Irena". However ring Roger, he seems to keep records of all GG and will tell you of any in your area.My "Anahere" is a bit far away.

Hi Gary
I've just finished my Golant Gaffer (Blue Moon). Based in Chichester Harbour. Mine is a little different from standard with raised cabin roof.
Very pleased with performance and looks.

Cost 50% more and took three times as long to build than I originally thought!

Send me an email if you want more information.
I think this should give some pictures (I hope!):

Good luck

Paul

Bluemoon, your boat looks awesome! I realize it is customary around here to offer such flattery and encouragement when new boats are launched but she really looks extraordinary with a bit of a cabin trunk. Glad to see someone finally did that especially since you were probably discouraged from doing so since so many have said it would ruin the boats looks and function. Obviously not.

So pray tell, how much headroom do you have in there? Clearly you haven't added very much. Did you consult the designer?

Thanks JimD

Extra cabin space is about 4.5 inches, which doesn't sound very much. However, gives cube of this in volume. I also widened the cabin top at the for'd end, which helps space a bit as well. The other benefit is that it gives more cockpit protection when going to windward. I talked to Roger about the changes - he was quite happy, but wanted me to keep the boom position as per the design (which I've done). The change wasn't quite as straightforward as it looks. The mast step and halyard anchors are on top of the cabin and so I had to strengthen the stucture underneath to take the loads.

For a small boat, she feels very substantial, with a decent sized cockpit for day sailing. Cabin space is always going to be limited, but I think fine for weekends for two or longer for one. The separate heads compartment will be a joy for the female members of the family (when I get around to fitting the doors).

Best regards
Paul

bluemoon,

although in my opinion the normal couchroof is high enough for the average sized adult, and even with the higher roof there will be just sitting headroom, I do like the profile of your boat with that raised cabin very much! It looks as good as the normal version, and you will probably have more light down below, because of these nice portholes in the cabin upstand.

As you, I've not yet installed the door for the heads compartment, although the door's allready finished. I'm not shure if perhaps it would be better to use a kind of curtain because of the limited space. Probably the door would never be closed!

Sailing performance is fine, even better as expected! The jib, set on the bowsprit, is quite effectiv, especially when going to windward. I do not use a furling gear for the staysail, so it can be attached to the forestay and therefor stays very well.

The boat is a great pleasure, and I think ,to any aspect the design can be highly recommended.

The mast is quite heavy; if there's the need of lowering it quite often, perhaps a hollowed mast would be easier to handle. Perhaps I will hollow it out in winter.

Unfortunately, Lurianna seems to be the only GG in Germany. It would be nice to meet some other GG's, perhaps next summer somewhere in the baltic sea (I know, it's far away from UK)? Or perhaps in France, at La semaine du Golfe?

All the best
Helmuth

Thanks Helle

I've been looking at the pictures of your boat as she was getting ready - very nice indeed.

Now having built the boat, I find that the greatest pleasure is in how well she sails. And not just in moderate winds. It was force 6 gusting higher this weekend and she sailed very well with just the two jibs. (and no main).

Best regards

Default Golant Gaffer

I am in the process of building one , G101. As someone else mentionned Classic Marine in the UK have review packages and are buiding most of the custom fittings for me.Right now my workshop is full with another dinghy I am building so to date my efforts on the Gaffer have been pieces like the tiller, rudder, and the mainmast.
The drawings are great.

You may have seen pictures of the Green Bottle which was up for sale some time ago. Its builder sent me originals of some of his construction photos that I could scan and send to you.

bluemoon that is one beautiful Golant Gaffer. You have enhanced the overall look and for me removed some of the limitations and , sorry , quirkiness of the original design. It looks like a proper salty sailing vessel. And has that "Just right" look about her.

Do you have a website, I would love to see more.
