Six youths in GreenFleet’s after-school boatbuilding program launched two Bevin’s skiffs in April 2011.  They modified them from the original Joe Youcha design by raising the freeboard 1″.  The boats will be used in GreenFleet’s summer environmental education and stewardship program.

SEPHIRA

SEPHIRA is based on a St. Ayles Skiff and was built and turned into a mucial instrument to see if we can learn how to communicate with whales. We launched and raced her at Mystic Seaport, CT. and then took her to the First International St. Ayles Skiff Races in Ullapool Scotland.

Youth Boat Building

The Youth Boat Building Program is held at the New Hampshire Boat Museum for boys and girls ages 12 and up. Students will build their own boat from a kit they select from August 1 through the 12th, weekdays from 9am to 3pm. The kits available for purchase are a one-person canoe $695, a one-person kayak $995, and a Bevin’s Skiff that will accommodate two adults $1,195. Students will be taught the safe use of hand and a limited number of small power tools, to assemble the kits.

Teaching with Small Boats

In 1997, Joe Youcha and his team at the Alexandria Seaport Foundation (ASF) in Alexandria, Virginia, designed the flat-bottomed, 11' 8" Bevin’s Skiff as a tool to teach math and boatbuilding skills to their apprentices.
