A GROUP OF PIROGUES

Scott Ames class at Pine Forest High School in Pensacola, FL spent the school year building pirogues, which he describes as Cajun canoes. The boats are 12-16 feet long depending on how well they did their scarf joints. The beam is 28" All of the boats were seaworthy when launched at Seminole, Alabam on a field trip in May, 2001. The students used bass to the ribs, stem, and stern, and yellow pine for the rails. The hull is construction of 1/4" scarfed BC plywood with taped fiberglass joints there were sealed, sanded, and painted.
