Sailing with the CHARLES W. MORGAN

Almost any mast against a skyline can inspire a poet or painter, but it takes authenticity, the ring of truth, to take the breath away from even the most jaded professional mariner. That such a ship—ready for sea with a crisp and purposeful air—should also be the oldest surviving American square-rigged merchantman only makes the sight more compelling. Such was the CHARLES W. MORGAN in the summer of 2014 during her first venture to sea in more than 90 years.

When I first met with Kit Pingree, she was midway through a three-week haulout of her 78′ motor vessel, TEAL. Between forecasts of rain showers, the first warmish days of the northwest spring had made an appearance, lending urgency to the varnishing and painting schedules and a long list of other tasks.

The Hardanger Fartøyvernsenter—Ships Preservation Center—is located on Norway’s Hardangerfjord in the town of Norheimsund. It began as an effort to restore one vessel, MATHILDE, and has grown to become one of Europe’s principal vessel restoration establishments.

The Salcombe Yawls of Devon

Distinctive racing yawls, tracing a long lineage to Devon coastal workboats, have been racing off the English town of Salcombe for generations. Here, the revolutionary NUFFIN (Y141), the boat that precipitated a split of the development class into two divisions in the 1980s, leads the fleet. Close behind are ANOTHER DILEMMA (Y173), FIRECREST (Y187), and SPRUCE GOOSE (Y177). All four boats were designed by Phil Morrison and sail in the Red Fleet, created after NUFFIN was built.
