I have had these Bolger plans for Diablo for 15 yrs. Originally I wanted to build it at the vocational high school where I was principal but that never happened. Then I wanted to build it in Biloxi, Ms while I was working there in 2009-20010. I did start a stich and glue boatbuilding class in Ocean Springs but the job ended before I could start the second phase which was to be the Diablo build. Finally I got down to business last summer and had a great time building Shearwater with my son and daughter.
Exactly 2 months from the day I began my kayak building adventure at The WoodenBoat School, I christened and launched my Shearwater Sport on Lake Champlain. What a joy to finally see it in the water! Despite the chilly morning air in northern New York it was a beautiful fall day and my shearwater sport performed admirably, as expected.
Named in honor of the love of my life, Jacqueline Skiff, whose last name is serendipitously apt!
Kjell Klinkenberg of Oslo, Norway, finished two boats in the summer of 2004: a 18' x 25" Cape Charles kayak (CLC designs) and a 16' x 4'5" Shearwater (Joel White). The boys in the pictures are his son Oyvind on the right, and his friend, Inge Svale. Kjell is at the helm.
