John Beck built this Chesapeake Light Craft Shearwater 17 hybrid using white and red cedar strips for the hull and decking, and added aniline dye to the hull to give it a blue color. John won the best in show at the 2007 Okoume Fest sponsored by CLC.
The Shearwater Hybrid combines the best qualities of stitch-and-glue plywood kayaks with the beauty of a cedar strip deck.
The Shearwater is an eye-catching, light and fast cruiser that does many things well. It is a strong contender for the budget-minded paddler looking to answer the 'if I could only have one kayak' need
On June 17, 2015, Mark and Suzanne Nye launched their Shearwater Double at Silver Springs Florida. The kayak, built from kit by Chesapeake Light Craft, took approximately 135 hours over a six month period. Construction is stitch and glue with sapele deck and okume hull.
Shearwater 17 made with wooden deck fittings, internal hatch hold downs, and skeg from Superior Kayaks, with custon made wooden control box and lever.
The deck of this CLC kayak is made of strip-planked Alaskan Yellow Cedar, Western Red Cedar and Nogal Peruvian Walnut - and the hull is made of stitch & glued 4mm Okoume plywood.
