SJOGIN

Bright Winter's day

Beating out of Beaton's

Happy Skipper

SJOGIN is a 22′ Koster boat model as far as I’ve been able to determine. Her knockabout sloop rig is common on the North Sea coast of Sweden. She was built of oak and cedar in southern New Jersey in 1962 by a retired square rigger captain. I've been told she was built to remind her Swedish builder of his homeland.

Her true origins remain unknown as no plans survive. My research to date suggests a Swedish origin but arguments could be made for other Scandinavian types as well. Her general appeal has resulted in several esteemed small boat designers interested in drawing plans, with Paul Gartside producing several versions from the lines taken off SJOGIN in 2011

She entered my stewardship in 1985 and is maintained with the help of David Beaton and Sons in West Mantoloking, NJ. SJOGIN sank during Sandy, the hurricane that made landfall near Beaton's in 2012. Her planking and other long overdue repairs are nearly done. We hope to have a Spring 2014 launch.

Sail slow my friends.
