Some of the folks involved in the Polk County Community Boatbuilding Project

Community boat building in Polk County, North Carolina, is flourishing, according to Katherine Korth, who is involved with the project. 30 students had signed up by July to build a series of 5×10 skiffs. These skiffs are designed by Sam Devlin of Devlin Designing Boat Builders in Olympia, Washington who graciously provided the plans without charge. So far the group has launched four boats, and have more on the way. Don Rausch is leading the program, which has become a real community project.

Hoiin Jung from Korea wrote to tell about his launch of a new Pelicano 18, designed by Sam Devlin. His father named it MY WAY 18 after one of his favorite Frank Sinatra songs. They built the boat from mahogany plywood, and made the deck and cockpit sole from Nu-Teak. The hull is covered with Awlgrip 2000 snow white paint. MY WAY 18 makes her way through the water in front of a Mercury 4-stroke, 40-hp outboard. She's smooth and powerful, running about 28 knots at 5000 rpm. Hoiin adds that his father is very happy to have this beautiful boat.
