October 8th, 1977, twenty-four “21 feet sailing boats” single handed left Penzance (United Kingdom) for Antigua with a stopover in Tenerife. The smallest offshore racing boats were born and so was favourite race: the Mini Transat.
This boat, with a LOA of 8 mt,develops an internal volume such as to allow 6 crew members a sailing cruise. The hull lines and deck lines are to corner for simplicity of construction, and are harmonized with the hull volume.
The design of the boat comes by request of a customer who already owns a Charles W. Wittholz’s catboat and wanted to have a beautiful tender for his yacht.
The design of Sportfish 570 comes from a collaboration with a Senegalese society, with the aim of creating fishing vessels for inland waters of modern conception.
This is a boat simple to build, economical to use and that has a minimum of habitability and a lot of deck space for outdoor living. The construction method is the “stitch and paste” because of its small size. The hull is in CPM 10 mm thk.
Start 55 expands the range of self-construction project of our Studio.
We chose the 9.1 mt LOA not to overcomplicate its construction, but to facilitate the availability of a place to build this boat, and at the same time to have internal volume that allows a comfortable cruise.
The input was “design a pure cruising boat”.The boat has wide internal volumes, limited draft, average/high displacement and sailing area which do not require a continuos sail change. The hull lines have been developed both to corner and round. We wanted to realize something new for deck design.
