Shipwright apprenticeships are year long, full time employment opportunities for graduates of boat building schools or those with commensurate experience. Apprentices work alongside master shipwrights in the maintenance and restoration of all the museum collection vessels.
From an 1889 log hulled bugeye to a 1934 Hoopers Island dovetail workboat, the apprentice and masters use traditional materials and methods to preserve the largest collection of indigenous Chesapeake Bay watercraft in the world. Apprentices both learn and teach as they interact with museum visitors on a daily basis.
