Seven Diamonds (named for the seven ash diamonds inlaid in the sides), paddled by Mark and Sheree Hanna on Tom’s Lake in the Hiawatha National Forest will be cruising the quiet waters of northern Michigan.
The sides are of 1 1/4 inch northern white cedar that taper out to as much as 2 inches at the stems. The ends of the bottom strips are staggered and flared to progressively develop the twist in the bottom. Seats and gunwales are of white ash, every piece of the boat except for the seats has a taper and a curve, my design strategy is to make the pieces flow into an eye appealing creation. I sawed most of the lumber on my own mill, I reduced the joint work considerably with this design, I estimate 120-130 hours of actual build time with finishing. Hope my design is inspirational to others.
