Ireland’s Water Wag

Ireland’s Water Wag–class dinghy pioneered the concept of one-design racing in 1887, and remains popular today. The Water Wag class began as a double-ended, or “Scotch-sterned” boat; by 1898, holes in the class rules led to the design of a transom-sterned replacement.

This is a Chesapeake Light Craft Petrel SG sea kayak. Construction is stitch and glue, fiberglass over stained Okuome ply. Custom changes to the kit included the soft pad eyes, dragonfly inlay, a carved skeg control housing and turned carrying toggles and paddle bead.

David Satter restored this 1931 Old Town Canoe in 2002, after paying just $100 for her at a yard sale in NJ. It is an Old Town 50-lb 15 model. He replaced 10 ribs and 30 feet of planking, and replaced the canvas; then gave her a new coat of paint and varnish.
