Cypress Pirogue
Everyone from Louisiana seems to remember that cypress pirogue boat Pawpaw kept in his barn. Cypress pirogues have since become a relic of the past. Pirogues are flat bottom boats designed to paddle shallow swamps and marshes.
Cajun Pirogue
Uncle John’s General Store, (www.unclejohns.com), offers easy-to-build Cajun Pirogue kits. Peter Mallory of Amelia Island, Florida, built one of these kits making a 15′6″ model with a 31″ beam.
A GROUP OF PIROGUES
Scott Ames class at Pine Forest High School in Pensacola, FL spent the school year building pirogues, which he describes as Cajun canoes. The boats are 12-16 feet long depending on how well they did their scarf joints.
ZYDECO 14 PIROGUE
John Burke built this pirogue using the Zydeco 14 plans by Applegate Boatworks of Veneta, Oregon. He writes "it is 13'3" in length and 34" in beam, constructed of 9mm okoume plywood on the bottom, and 6mm for the sides, a total of two 4 x 8 sheets were needed to construct the hull.
INNDA
Christian Neumann of Absam, Austria, who last year built an Iain Oughtred sailboat, has been building again and recently launched a pirogue design for his grandson Moses. This design is from Dynamite Payson’s book Instant Boatbuilding with Dynamite Payson.
NORFOLK TURTLE
Brian Mardall, of London, England, designed and built this car-toppable rowing boat weighing just 65 lbs. He calls it an East Anglian Gun Punt, and likens it to a Louisiana pirogue. Brian used plywood, Douglas-fir, and mahogany in his construction of NORFOLK TURTLE.
TRIPLE E
Rod built this boat for his friend, Roger Hudson or Beacon Bay, South Africa, during a trip to an ecovillage in South Africa in the summer of 2002. With only a table saw, cordless drill and a few hand tools, he built TRIPLE E out of a sheet of Meranti plywood.
Pierogi
When I retired from Coast Guard active duty in 2007, I made a promise to myself to build a boat. Purchased a pirogue kit and plans from Uncle Johns in 2008.
