Norway’s ubiquitous double-ended motor launch, the snekke (aka sjekte, or kogg), evolved from open sail-powered fishing boats. Today, as recreational boats, they have a variety of configurations: Some are protected by wraparound windshields, others have small cabins, and many retain their simple workboat layouts.

Building a Fowey River Boat

In Fowey, a small town in Cornwall, England, a racing dinghy fleet was born in 1950 when a local dentist, E.W. Mogg, known to all as “Moggy,” ordered a boat built to plans by the yacht designer Reg F. Freeman. The original plans for the 15-footer, published in Yachting World in 1939, had included a foredeck, samson post, and skeg, but Moggy asked his builder to omit those. By 1965, 36 boats were built with the same modifications, and they constituted a one-design racing class that came to be known as Fowey River boats. Although interest in the class started to wane in the 1970s, a resurgence began in 1991, when an existing boat was restored and lines were taken and patterns made for the construction of a new one.

Puget Sound Rumrunners

A typical Thanksgiving Day on Puget Sound is windy, rainy, and chilly. But in 1925, on the eve of the feast day, a clear night allowed the full moon to light up the shore at Woodmont Beach, which is roughly 12 miles south of Seattle, Washington. Federal agents, acting on a tip, had set up a stakeout, and they were not misled: soon the sound of unmuffled twin marine engines—straight eight-cylinder 300-hp Sterling Dolphins—broke the silence.

Searching for Charles D. Mower

A long time ago now, at a cluttered, used-book shop on the New Jersey shore, I acquired the 1945 edition of Sailing Craft: Mostly Descriptive of Smaller Pleasure Sail Boats of the Bay. First published in 1928, Sailing Craft had been conceived and edited by a wealthy Philadelphian named Edwin J. Schoettle. Although he’d gained considerable success as a manufacturer of cardboard boxes, Schoettle’s real passion was sailing. It was this boat obsession, centered on but not limited to Barnegat Bay in New Jersey, and his impressive social connections that gave Schoettle access to the best-known yachtsmen and designers of his time.

Herreshoff Catboats

My first visit to the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in the mid-1970s was memorable for many reasons. The collection of automobiles, steam and gasoline engines, locomotives, bicycles, and other objects ranged from marvelous to mind-boggling. But it was one particular surprise that remains foremost in my mind. During my wandering on what is said to be the world’s largest expanse of parquet flooring, I suddenly encountered, of all things, a catboat. There she sat in a well-fitted wooden cradle with a plaque identifying her as SPRITE, built by the Herreshoffs of Bristol, Rhode Island.

Even on a calm autumn morning, it’s hard to imagine that it was ever quiet at Brooklin Boat Yard. The yard has been a Maine boatbuilding institution since naval architect Joel White bought out his boatbuilding mentor, Arno Day, to found the business in 1960. Arno had found it all getting out of hand, too big, what with three employees in addition to himself and Joel. These days, the parking area fills in quickly in the morning with ten times that many boatbuilders, who nod their greetings as they arrive at work and the first machine noises inside break the morning stillness.
