ZOCCOLO

Martin Herbert built ZOCCOLO, an International One-Metre design, to race in regattas up and down Canada’s west coast. He launched her on January 20, 2017. She is one metre (39″) long, 16cm (6″) wide, and draws 42cm (17″). The class minimum weight is 4 kg (8.8 lbs), and Martin added 180g of corrector weights to achieve this minimum. He made the hull from red and yellow cedar, and topsides and deck are from two layers of mahogany veneer sandwiching a layer of 2-oz fiberglass. He also made the sails and fittings. Martin has built 12 International One-Meters, only the last two are wood, but he says now that he knows the joys of working with wood, “rumor has it that there will be no going back.” Martin took these pictures of ZOCCOLO on her home waters at Ganges Harbour, Saltspring Island, in British Columbia.
