KIWI II

KIWI II is a development of New Zealander Richard Hartley’s Trailer Sailer 21 design. This boat was started as a retirement project by Kennith Tycer. Howard Berg purchased the unfinished boat in 1995 and with the permission of the designer added a bowsprit to improve its windward performance. The boat was sailed in 1996 on the Columbia River for 2 years and then was put in storage and worked on and off (mostly off) until 2012 when it was finally finished. The swing keel was ideal for navigating the river’s sand bars in the fall. The multi-chine hull is plywood on mahogany frames; the deck is covered with Hypalon coated fabric. Hartley’s boats are very popular in New Zealand and Australia
