A 39′4″ (12m) solar-electric research trimaran

AEAEA is a 39′4″ trimaran motorsailer meant to be used for water-quality sampling. She’d also make a dry, comfortable, and stable cruiser. The main hull (vaka) shows simple, dory-like sections. The boat will beach easily.

  • Mainsail: 478 sq ft ( 44.4 m2)
  • Reaching Spinnaker: 607 sq ft (56.4 m2)
  • Electric Drives: Twin Elco EP-14s (6.24 kW @ 48V)

Passage from the cockpit to the galley and navigation station is easy, because these spaces are all on the same level. The dinette is forward and down, and the berths are outboard, in the wings. A bulkhead separates the living space from the forward bosun’s locker. Right—The swing-up rudder and two centerboards allow the boat to balance on any point of sail. The boards will also come in handy when motoring.

Twin Elco EP-14s powered by a lithium-ion battery bank—and solar panels—will drive AEAEA when she is not under sail.
