BIG BOY

A diesel-powered looper

by JF Bedard

This 3-D animation is of the concept boat BIG BOY, a simple diesel-powered cruiser meant for a couple to travel the inside loop—the Hudson River, canals, and Intracoastal Waterway. They plan to stay at local B & Bs along the way—but to stay aboard occasionally. Featured in the Sketchbook department of WoodenBoat magazine No. 279 (March/April 2021).

BIG BOY has a centerline double berth, but otherwise simple amenities. The anchor and mooring gear are handled safely by a person standing on the berth. At 16 knots, BIG BOY will use 9.2 gallons of fuel per hour and have a range of 174 nautical miles. But at a stately 7 knots, the boat will sip fuel and have a range of 588 nautical miles.
