Launchings

POINTED SHOES is a Great Auk kayak built by Dave Palmer in both Michigan and Maryland. Dave used Nick Schade's book The Strip-Built Sea Kayak by Nick Schade, and recommends it highly.

Over a period of a few months in 2008 Shelburne, Nova Scotia craftsmen and volunteers built two 23-foot boats from plans of the launch carried by Capt. Bligh's HMAV BOUNTY.

Though he describes himself as a man with little money and no experience, Ed Mahoney decided the first boat he built would be a big one: a Didi 38 designed by Dudley Dix.

FIRST TRY is constructed with yellow pine framing covered in a fiberglassed and gelcoated southern pine exterior plywood hull. The stem is ash tying into an oak keel with oak bottom rubbers. The chines, gunwale rubbers, coamings, windshield frame, etc are made of Honduran mahogany.

Doyle Herman started restoration of this 15' Wagemaker in September of 2001. He launched it in May 2002. He stripped the boat to a bare hull, replaced the deck plywood and part of the transom. Wolverine Boats of Grand Rapids, MI built the boat in 1957.

Rich Gaito is seen here sailing JAYLENE KERR off Merchant Island, just south of Stonington, Maine. JAYLENE KERR is a Joel White Shearwater design (16' x 53" beam) that Rich built during the winter of 2001-2002. He used plywood lap construction on laminated frames.

Rick Granger built this Chesapeake Light Craft Wood Duck 10 over six weeks in the winter of 2010-2011.  The 10' hull weighs just 34 pounds and is made from 3mm okoume plywood, with a deck of western red and white cedar strips.

BLACK DAMSEL is a Ken Bassett Firefly design, plans from WoodenBoat. Bassett’s plans call for plywood fastened to stem, keelson and chine logs. I wanted to build this boat stitch and glue to simplify things and hopefully reduce the weight.

Tom Crucitti works for Arey's Pond Boat Yard where he restored this 22' Great South Bay Cat, ANN ELIZABETH. He replaced five planks, three frames, and the entire deck. ANN ELIZABETH was relaunched on August 10th 2002. Contact Arey's Pond at Box 222, South Orleans, MA 02662.
