WHISP
Richard Maldonado chose the 13′ QT Rowing Skiff design by Jim Michalak (www.jimsboats.com) for his first build. He wanted to build a boat mostly from found materials, and except for the luan plywood that he purchased, everything else was recycled.
Gypsy Skiff
George Wolfe and Dan Hamilton built this Gypsy skiff from Dynamite Payson’s book Build the New Instant Boats. He said the plans were very straightforward, and the boat went together easily. He did not expect to spend quite so long sanding to get her mirror finish.
Grey Fox
I built this Clint Chase-designed 16′ Calendar Islands Yawl from a kit from Chase Small Craft. After a year and a half of weekends and nights building it, I got it launched in June 2018, just in time for the WoodenBoat Show in Mystic, CT.
MOLLY
David Blake built MOLLY, a 16′ x 6′ Stevenson Weekender sloop from okoume plywood and mahogany, then covered the hull with fiberglass and epoxy. He made the mast from Sitka spruce and the boom and gaff from Douglas-fir.
BANGOR POOL BOAT
Stephen Carpenter of Presumpscot Woodworks in Gorham, ME restored this "Bangor Pool Boat" in the winter of 2001. It is 13' long with a 52" beam. He does not know its age or place of origin, though he has some indication that it was built somewhere in Penobscot Valley.
MS KEELY
Matt Gillam and his father worked together for seven years to restore MS KEELY a 1958 Penn Yan Caribbean. They replaced her deck, nearly all of her oak frames, and repaired her gunwales. They also redid her entire interior and gave her a new finish all around.
Got Mahagony?
My boat is a “couch boat” which is the only description I could think of since I designed it for comfortable seating and aesthetic Italian curvy lines.
Two Kayaks
Two kit boats from Chesapeake Light Craft, built from March to July, 2012. Mill Creek 16.5 and Chesapeake 17LT. Built in my shop in Points, WV, and launched at Camp Seven Lake, near Manistique, MI.
GETOFFTHEROCKS
Cosine Wherry. John Hartsock designed it, Bob and Erica Pickett promoted it, J. D. Brown wrote the book (Rip, Strip, and Row).
