Launchings

After taking Thom McLaughlin’s class on building pond yachts at the WoodenBoat School in 2009, John Stoudt spent the rest of that year into the early winter of 2010 working on this model.

Rob Caveney launched this glued-lapstrake plywood Annapolis Tandem Wherry in April this year following plans from Chesapeake Light Craft. The hull is 18′9″ long, Rob reports that,“As advertised, this boat is a real rocketship.

Paul Wagstaff's catboat was two decades in the designing and building. He was attracted to catboats because of their stability and he wanted a boat that could be built in his garage, trailered easily, and could be single-handed.

Adrienne Keller and her father Kip launched their Penguin sailboat in October of 2007, the first boat either of them had built. Kip sailed Penguins, which were designed by Phil Rhodes, as a youth in upstate New York.

I built this slightly stretched version (9 1/2 to 11 ft) of Paul Butler’s Montana Pram for my son, his wife and 2 daughters (2 and 7) exploring for ducks, frogs, and adventure on a small pond adjoining their back yard.  We launched it on my granddaughter’s 7th birthday in July 2024.

My friend and I built matching row boats to Sam Devlin’s plans, originally called the 5X10, now called Bella. Nevin named his Theresa, mine is unnamed as yet. Despite the fact that Sam’s classes build these little rowers in a weekend, Nevin and I took five years to complete ours.

Rod built this boat for his friend, Roger Hudson or Beacon Bay, South Africa, during a trip to an ecovillage in South Africa in the summer of 2002. With only a table saw, cordless drill and a few hand tools, he built TRIPLE E out of a sheet of Meranti plywood.

This boat was designed and built by Robert Wallace between October 2001 and May 2002. He launched her in May on White Oak Pond in northeastern Pennsylvania. The skiff has a 10' LOA and maximum beam of 39". She is a semi-V hull.

We launched our Penobscot 14 after Just under two years build time. All plywood is Hoop Pine. The stem, stringers, transom, and thwarts are all Tasmanian Blackwood, with the rest a mix of other Australian hardwoods.

Launched in Canberra and it rows like a dream.
