This is the most recent of two Abenaki kits I have built (materials supplied by Newfound Woodworks of Bristol, NH). It was a joy to build and even more fun to paddle. My wife and I launched this canoe on Drakes Creek in Franklin, KY on October 10th, 2021. It tracked nicely was very stable.
This is my new canoe. It is a custom design from Ashes Still Water Boats — the model named Quick. It is designed to be somewhere between solo canoe and sea kayak. Hull is made from cedar with spruce light strips, gunnels are from ash. Lenght 17′ width 26″. Weight 18kg (40Lbs)
Scotty Pugh is proud of this 7′10″ dinghy, MADER, that he designed and built at his home in Sardis, Tennessee. He made the keel and stem from ash, the frames and seats from white pine, the mast and oars from spruce, and plywood for everything else.
Customized Solo PortageThe canoe was completed in 2013. The overall dimensions are of the Solo Portage scale with the modifications made by adding both an inner and outer stem in the bow and stern. The boat is designed as a single blade paddle canoe. The length is 14′6″.
Donald Melick built a 14'2 x 4'6" Cosine Wherry in 1992. He added a sailing rig in 2002. It has 90 square feet of sail, and is a standing lug rig with a sprit boom. He used a sail plan from Phil Bolger's book 103 Sailing Rigs.
Paul Newman of Melbourne, Australia, just built a Wood Duck 12 Kayak from a Chesapeake Light Craft kit. He spent about 12 months on the stitch-and-glue plywood construction. The finished 12' boat weighs just 40 lbs. Paul will paddle his Wood Duck on the many waterways of his state of Victoria.
“Sea Shadow,” Canada’s first St. Ayles skiff, was launched on June 1st. Twelve friends from the Bay of Quinte region in eastern Ontario started the project at the beginning of January. Most of the group knew their way around a woodworking shop and a few had prior boat building experience.
Richard Hudak, of Hilo, Hawaii, built this gleaming canoe from sugi cedar. He cut the tree down and milled the wood himself. He made the paddle from koa wood. This photograph was taken on New Year's Eve at Reeds Bay on the Big Island in Hawaii.
Rowboat #17 was developed over the course of 5 years. I had built 16 models to evaluate performance and ease of building. The main purpose was for pleasure rowing with my dogs Rowdy & Nala.
