The Kettenburg & Classic Yacht Regatta

-

San Diego Yacht Club and the Ancient Mariners Sailing Society will be hosting the 2013 Kettenburg & Classic Yacht Regatta on June 28-30, 2013. Paying homage to the Kettenburg marque and open to all classes of wooden boats, sail and power, this year’s event promises to be the premier event for wooden boat enthusiasts on the West coast. The event will also benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego and the San Diego Maritime Museum.

Starting Friday, June 28th at 2 pm, the event kicks off with a Concours D’Elegance showcasing some of the finest wooden boats ever made. The Concours features a cadre of notable judges as competition between the finely fit classics will be close. Of course all the boats are beautiful and they will be med tied (stern to the dock) at the front dock of SDYC for all three days amongst the throng of viewers enjoying the ambiance classic yachts.

On Saturday, the boats sail out to the Coronado Rhodes with full gear and grind it out racing two buoy races. Each race requires all the skill and experience available to skippers and crew. Old school spinnakers with dip poles and double sheets and guys will be common. Main sails, mizzen sails, stay sails, jackyard tops''l and gollywoggers will be a challenge to handle on buoy courses.

Saturday evening the crews return to the dock to enjoy a sit down dinner followed by a presentation given by the San Diego Maritime Museum covering the building of the replica San Salvador, the first boat to make landfall in California.

Sunday features a bay tour by the power boats followed by a bay race by the sailboats. Just as they started races back in the day, the start is off the front of SDYC with the race committee stationed in the cupola. The old cannon will be dusted off and fired off by SDYC’s Commodore.

A prize giving ceremony will follow the racing with awards given out by Ronald McDonald Charities of San Diego and the San Diego Maritime Museum.

It’s a fun event, and these old boats won’t last forever. We hope you come down and sail with us. More information is available at www.sdyc.org/kettenburg.
