My Doug Hylan designed 13′ Beach Pea is the first wooden boat I have built from scratch. She is made from okoume ply, Douglas Fir, with utile mahogany thwarts and knees and Sitka spruce spars. Construction took place in my workroom which measures 15′ by 8′ and apart from my power drill I used only hand tools. The entire project took 27 months and was made possible by the comprehensive plan and excellent set of articles by Doug Hylan in WoodenBoat magazine. She rows like a dream, and when I have sorted out how to shift my weight appropriately I am sure I will enjoy sailing her.
