14 foot Quahog skiff
Joe Walsh of RI has been working on a writen history of a passing tridition. The Quahog skiff was a staple of the waterfront in Rhode Island for many years. Of late they are hard to find.
This section of our web site, an extension of the Launchings department of WoodenBoat magazine, is dedicated to sharing news of recently launched wooden boats built or restored by our readers.
If you’ve launched a boat within the past year, please email us at launchings@woodenboat.com, or post your news here.

This is my new canoe. It is a custom design from Ashes Still Water Boats — the model named Quick. It is designed to be somewhere between solo canoe and sea kayak. Hull is made from cedar with spruce light strips, gunnels are from ash. Lenght 17′ width 26″. Weight 18kg (40Lbs)
Beetlecat Hull # 43. Originally constructed in 1946. Reframed and replaced transom, keel, and centerboard box. Parts of deck and hull needed to be replaced. Work resembled an archeological dig. In places there were iron fasteners, bronze fasteners and stainless steel screws.
Joe Greeley launched POGO, a Footy model designed by Flavio Faloci, in 2015. Since then, she suffered severe damage in an accident in 2017 and spent the last two years “on the hard” undergoing repairs.
William Leake likes the look of strip-built canoes but his wife prefers the look of lapstrake canoes. He thought a hybrid model—strip-planked on the bottom half and lapstrake above that—might be the solution to both of them getting what they want.
Here’s my recently completed Herreshoff Biscayne Bay 14 built from a WoodenBoat plan. I read the construction article in WB issues 96-98 back in 1990-91 and loved the look of this boat. Made a few minor changes to the plan and outfitted the boat using all antique or replica hardware.
I fell in love with the Biscayne Bay 14 when I first came to Woodenboat School 30 years ago. Life intervened, and it took nearly 30 years before I built a boat from the plans I bought way back when. She is largely built according to the how-to articles in WoodenBoat issues 96-98.
