Launchings

Jonathan White of Victoria, Australia built this Acorn dinghy in just five months. It is made of 6mm marine plywood and hoop pine with five coasts of varnish all around, and another five coats inside for good measure.

Herb Pollock keeps the 9'6" Nutshell Pram he built pulled up on the beach in front of his house in Holland, MI. Named SQUAREHEAD, she is a Joel White design.

James McFadden, age 4, has a wonderful pilot in his 11-year-old brother Dominic, on this Chesapeake Light Craft 14′ Wood Duck Double Kayak. Dominic built it with a little help from his grandfather, Ned Farinholt. Dominic and James live near the Shenandoah River in Front Royal, Virginia.

Blanket Bay was built for my granddaughter, born today, May 27th. I wanted a design that got the cradle up off the floor (my daughter has three little dogs) and this design fit the bill. It’s clinker built of 1088 Hydratec Meranti ply, with solid Maple gunwales.

Patrick Dawson of Ottawa, Ontario, writes that he’s been wanting to build this boat for over 25 years.

My Doug Hylan designed 13′ Beach Pea is the first wooden boat I have built from scratch. She is made from okoume ply, Douglas Fir, with utile mahogany thwarts and knees and Sitka spruce spars.

Raimo Repo of Ontario built JOY, a 13' Chamberlain dory skiff, from lines drawn by the late Mr. John Gardner. He bought the plans from the Mystic Seaport Museum after attending the WoodenBoat Show at Mystic in the late 1990s.

I built this Nutshell pram in the strip method of construction for my two daughters to learn to sail and row, hence the name “Double Trouble”. I have yet to add the mast for the sail rig, but we managed to put it in the water for rowing this past week.

Pintail is a 25′ Chesapeake Bay draketail built by participants in the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum’s Apprentice for a Day Program in St. Michaels, Md.

After admiring the Crowninshield FAME, and Maynard’s article a few years back, I decided to imitate the high peaked spar design of the sails. CAPTAIN NATHAN is 19 inches long, 6 inch beam, 8 inch keel with weights. It sails best in some breeze, with a tendency to windward.
