Each season more than 700 students from around the world come to take courses and learn new skills at the WoodenBoat School. In what used to be the Porter's dairy barn, elite instructors teach up to a dozen students each week in the practical arts of boat construction and its related skills. On the waterfront, the historic boathouse serves as classroom for sailing, rowing, and kayaking courses. Rich Hilsinger, who came to the WoodenBoat School in 1983 as a student, is now the school director. He was instrumental in the school’s expansion from a few classes each summer to nearly 100 classes in boatbuilding, woodworking, and seamanship.
