FLYING EAGLE was launched by Vinal Beal on the Moosabec Reach of Beals Island, Maine, in 1963. Vinal designed and built all such lobsterboats during winter when not lobstering, by means of a half-model (no plans).
PATIENCE is a cedar strip hybrid 12′ Wood Duck Kayak. She is glassed in and out, and weighs in at 45 lbs. This was my first atempt at strip building. It was labor intensive but highly rewarding.
I built this boat from a kit purchased from Chesapeake Light Craft. I have built 4 wood strip boats previously. I built a kayak, a canoe, a row boat and a sail boat. My saying is “never build your last boat”.
I sold HELENA in 1985 after about ten years of owning and cruising in it. Then I bought it back in 2012 and began restoration work.
The boat is a mahogany strip over cherry and walnut frame skiff with maple accents and walnut gunnels. The seats and breasthook are sapelle with maple accents. This was my first build and was built without a plan.
